SAD!!!!!!!!!

Baseball suffered from the 1994 strike, and the home run chase between Sosa and McGwire helped bring back baseball

So we have to use a substance to bring back A GAME???? Come on man.

Also, steroids were not a legit issue to the fans until the 2000's, which is after the fact that they have already saved America's pastime.

Yopu can't have it both ways bud. LOOK at your post.

It helped, no doubt. However, no one is sure to what extent that steroids aided the players, but they definitely helped.

I guess steroids ruined the game for you, but sports were better back in the good old days anyway, so this is really a moot point.

yes

well, it wasn't the substance alone. the race was huge, and sosa's personality/descent created the perfect framework

had it been, mcguire/bonds, it wouldn't have been as big. big mac was reclusive and bonds is an a-hole

both are wrong. The 98 HR chase helped the game recove. There is nothing but anecdotel evidence that steroids or PED's help power numbers.

If taking steroids help you hit, why did Jeremy Giambi have all of 52 HR, for his career?

There ya GO!!! Sports are NOT sports ANYMORE on the PRO LEVEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IF the NBA DISSOLVED TOMORROW I wouldn't miss it a bit. If the NFL doesn't have a season. I could care less. The SB has lost ALL its luster for me. But hey I am old school, BUT I do keep up. I am not as current as some on here, BUT I know how things work. Just sayin.

According to the Game of Shadows, Bonds started using steroids after the 1998 season.

After the 1998 season, he had a 164 OPS+ through 6621 AB. At a similar point in his career, Aaron had a 157 OPS+ through his first 6510 AB. He walked twice as much as Aaron. Bonds had seasons with a WAR (wins above replacement level) above 8.0 five times even before anybody suspected him of picking up a steroids needle. Aaron had seasons with a WAR above 8.0 four times for his entire career. Bonds led all position players in WAR 6 times. Aaron zero for his entire career. From 1986-1998, Bonds led the NL in offensive WAR six times. He had three different seasons with an offensive WAR above 9.0. Aaron led his league in offensive WAR twice for his entire career and had seasons with an offensive WAR above 9.0 twice for his entire career. Defensively, Bonds is 6th all-time in defensive WAR and compiled pretty much all of his defensive value before he blew up physically. Aaron is 47th all-time in defensive WAR. Bonds finished in the league top 10 in stolen bases 9 times, again all before he was suspected of using steroids and stole bases at a 78.5% clip. Aaron finished in the league top 10 in stolen bases 8 times and stole bases at a 76.7% clip. Bonds was the better offensive and defensive player as well as the superior baserunner. So how was Aaron the greater player?

It makes you better than you would be honestly.

Most people on this board couldn't hit college pitching even with steroids. Pujols can light up major league pitchers even without juicing.

But anyone who juices will improve. It just won't turn a bum into a superstar.

Steroids accomplish 2 things helpful to athletics. They dramatically increase muscle mass which = greater strength. In terms of hitting that's bat speed.
Secondly, they increase reparation of muscle after weight lifting. Lifting destroys muscle cells. It must repair to get bigger. That takes time. Steroids reduces time.
I've known lots of guys in the gym who used steroids after reaching a body building plateau and becoming frustrated. They had immediate spurts of growth in muscle mass. Also had facial acne and temper issues.

Not gonna read 100 pages of that stuff. But if it concludes that steroids don't increase strength and performance, it's crap.

steroids do not do this directly

i finally got around to reading it (i thought it was a different angle), and i always figured the ball meant more

steroids increase muscle mass, but i don't know how much tehy increase your fast-twitch fibers or connective tissues. those give you the quick-strike explosiveness that you need for things like home runs, as well as a consistent swing that can place the right part of the bat on the ball, at the right angle (skill that has nothing to do with mass)

There was a guy in my gym about 20 years ago who I shall call Bob. Bob was 5-7, 190 with big muscles and a small waistline. He was about 28 years old. He worked out every day for 3 hours and took all sorts of dietary supplements.

But he was stuck at his size and strength level. He finally complained about how his work didn't increase his size. The owner of Fitness World said, "Hey, Bob, this is Fitness World. You need to go to Bigness World."

Bob was gone for three months. He came back at 220 with amazing gains in strength. Plus acne. Plus a sharp temper. Bigness World was steroids. The stuff works.

He also married a female body builder who worked out in that gym. She was 30 and had facial acne.

I'd love to see they look now in their 50s.
