Miller's humor is not for everyone as he can definitely come across in a pompous/"I'm smarter than you manner." I doubt the average football fan is going to get a "Flowers for Algernon" reference.
He was best with the quick off the cuff stuff. But when it was obvious that he had some rehearsed "look how smart I am" bit ready to go, sometimes when it didn't even fit the situation, it just wasn't great.
I'm enough of a slacker nerd to get some of his references, but I'm also a football fan and at times thought, ok dude that's enough. Let them talk about the game that's happening right now.

Him and Kornhole fought the whole time

Remember when Rush Limbaugh was on there for a short time until he got booted off?

I feel like the problem with Miller was that he wasn't the right fit for the majority of the MNF audience. It's kind of like if the Manningcast was the only way to watch MNF. If it were, America might finally turn on the Mannings.
Personally, I liked his humor and the references were great when they hit.

I can’t believe that was 2000.

I didn't like it. Many people were torn in wanting to usher in something a little different. It was an experiment.

I've always liked Dennis Miller, whether it was SNL, his HBO show or MNF. Norm Macdonald as a guest on his talk show was always awesome.

He once was calling a Detroit lions game whose starting cornerbacks were Terry Fair and Todd Lyght and Miller said something like "you know a team's in trouble when their cornerbacks are Fair and Lyght." It was an obvious joke about their names but the stupid Lions fans didn't get the joke and started bombarding ABC with complaints. They thought he was saying their corners sucked. lol

Didn’t Rush get canned for saying Donavan McNabb was overrated because he was black? Dennis Miller is different. Don’t dislike him or love him. He wasn’t that bad.

Over the years MNF has trotted out some of the worst announcers in sports history
Dierdorf was pretty brash...
Don Meredith...his Cowboys unexpectedly got blown out by some poor team (the Cardinals?), and he was unable to comment on the game without displaying bias and trashing the team for running up the score on his old team.

I really don’t remember much about him being on MNF.
It was claimed that he was mainly just cracking preplanned jokes about the proper way to pronounce players' last names and that he couldn't generate one-liners on the spot to describe a play that had just happened. I liked him a lot though and wish that the network had just shaken off the haters and kept him.

No, but he was on some ESPN pregame show.

I liked him. He was too smart for the normal idiot watching football. He’s very…erudite.

Drunk Dandy Don slurring & singing turn out the lights was prime MNF
You had to watch MNF back then to see the weekend game highlights since there was no ESPN or anywhere else you could see NFL highlights.
