Deion Sanders: They’re letting too many players into the Hall of Fame

quote:

“What is a Hall of Famer now? Is it a guy who played a long time?” Sanders said. “It’s so skewed now. Once upon a time, a Hall of Famer was a player who changed the darn game, who made you want to reach in your pocket and pay your admission to see that guy play. That’s not a Hall of Famer anymore. Every Tom, Dick and Harry, you’re a Hall of Famer, you’re a Hall of Famer, you’re a Hall of Famer. They let everybody in this thing. It’s not exclusive anymore. And I don’t like it.”

Although Sanders didn’t want to name any specific players who he thinks have watered down the Hall of Fame, when Patrick asked him about Eli Manning, Sanders answered, “You get the point.”

Deion is right. Playing a long time does not make you an all time great.

Hall of Fames exist to tell the story of the game in which they encompass. That includes all of the greats and their accomplishments.

Do Aikman and Namath’s stats really scream “elite all time at the position”? Absolutely not. Are you going to skip them if you are telling the story of the game in it’s entirety? Absolutely not.

Some of y’all get way too bogged down in the stats and miss the narrative and celebration of the game.

There are 326 members of the HOF. It’s not like we’re looking at a 25% acceptance rate.

I can agree, to me a hall of famer is someone who is top 5 or considered elite for an extended period of time in their career. It's an individual accomplishment, not so much a team award.

Eli was never a top 5 qb, not even a single year in his career. At least Kurt was elite for a few years and arguably the best for a few too.

100 years of professional football on this country, so you’re looking at least 50,000 men who have taken a snap in an NFL game.

That means .652% of players in NFL history are in the HoF. That’s being on the generous side of things. It’s more than likely less than .5%.

Would I personally vote for Eli to be in the Hall? No. Would I throw a hissy fit and act like it’s some miscarriage of justice because a bronze bust of a guy is sitting in a building in Canton while that guy gets a new jacket? Hell no.

Some of y’all need some perspective in your lives.

I just don't like the decades of campaigning and then some guy gets in from the Veterans' Committee because they want their buddy in.

Some wrongs were righted by the Veterans' Committee like Ray Guy because sportswriters back when he played didn't think a punter was that important or couldn't take the place of a full-time player (even though they let in Jan Stenarud as a pure kicker...and his stats are pedestrian...66.8% FGs.

I mean Jerry Kramer was a finalist 10X before getting voted in by the Veteran's Committee at age 82.

What changed? He hadn't played in 40 years.

But if you're part of a dynasty, seems like half the team gets in...See all the Packers in and all the Steelers.

And yet 13 HOF players disagree with him about Eli.

I was just laughing the other day about this.

The Hall of Fame is now set up to where there are benchmarks/thresholds that if any player reaches they are now “HOF worthy” because X other player had same/worse stats. More and more players are now reaching these thresholds and it’s going to make it awkward

Eventually they will need to have an elite Hall of Fame to rank the Hall of Famers against each other

Absolutely agree. A hall of famer should be someone that is a once in a decade kind of talent. My test is this: as a fan, when I see my team has to play this particular QB or WR or DE or whatever, I'm anxious and dread it. Because that player will most likely completely take over the game.

People argue whether Eli Manning should be in the Hall of Fame. My first thought is, when my team had to play him, was I like, "Fuuuck. Damn, we gotta play Eli this week. So much for getting that win we needed." No, of course not.

I somewhat agree, but that’s a terrible criteria. Only skill players from a few high profile teams would be HOF worthy.

Deion was a dynamic player with a lot of highlights, but 90%+ of his games were boring if you paid to watch him. He shut down his side of the field, and QBs rarely threw anywhere near him.

Carmelo Anthony feels like his Jersey should be retired in the Garden....he literally did nothing for that franchise.

Agree with Deion.

It's not the hall of pretty good. Being an above average player who has a long career shouldn't default you in.
