I don't think he meant for it to get as big as it did but nonetheless, he made it all up.

He didn't know her for four years. That's a lie/embellishment.
I'd guess Roniaiah acted as her cousin, told Teo "she saw you at the game back in 2009 and thought you were cute" and started texting Teo then as her. Tuiasosopa might have even created a fake meeting for them, but I doubt that.
I think most of this is rooted either in Teo's embarrassment to be intimately, emotionally connected to an online girl, embarrassment at having been duped, a desire for media attention, or a combination of all three.

I don't think anyone in this thread (rocket, buckeye please correct me if I am wrong), thinks a word of that SI transcript is truth. It is all lies in that SI story. 100%
People are getting lost in where the lies began IMO.
I don't think that transcript proves he was in on it from the beginning at all. Don't get me wrong. He may have been. The transcript obviously proves he was lying in mid October.
But was he lying when he said his girlfriend died in mid-September? Not sure at this point. That's the big question IMO.

I'm not defending ND in this scenario, but I'd imagine the hoax was kept among a few people. The Asst. Marketing guy for ND Athletics who found out about the fundraiser wouldn't have known...and likely his boss didn't either.
