Correct. His "gain" was essentially everything he could legally (or withing the NCAA rules) obtain as a college football player.
Dude was an above-average at best (not great) middle linebacker, who nearly won the Heisman freaking Trophy.

Without a doubt, I don't think this cuts Te'o any slack. He lied about some girl that he only knew of from the internet and turned it into the love of his life that inspires him to "play like a champion" everyday.

And what if Te'o is gay like we all think BUT he had a past relationship with Ronaiah and it went south, so he wanted to get back at him? Or he was jealous of him?

yeah
This dude was about to make bank from his popularity.
His popularity came from two things:
-ND being undefeated
-Him having two people die at once and people feeling sorry for him
He is an average football player that wasn't very famous before the deaths.

lol I beg to differ. This whole story is one hell of an elaborate troll
Quick story: me and a buddy played flag football our freshman year at LSU. Met some guy involved with the UREC organizing leagues. He asked if he could give our Facebook info to his cousin, who was an attractive freshman coed looking for good company. We said sure.
This girl adds us both, and starts sending the raunchiest shite. Just begging for sex and all that jazz. We notice all of her FB friends are dudes. We get suspicious, say she's the dude from the REC trolling.
She calls us. Definitely a chick. She continues her slutty talk, now on the phone. We're still a bit weirded out by her, so we say, no thanks.
Two weeks later, dude from the Rec gets arrested for pretending to be that girl and sexting U-High students.
Moral of the story: Phone calls are easy to set up.
