The responses I heard were that there were discrepancies but not enough to halt a story. And if an all-american LB from Notre Dame says his gf died, well, then she died. Until now.

That's why I believe Te'o is in on it...
It probably started out harmlessly. His friend knew he was socially awkward, so he would create a fake profile and troll him.
A few weeks in, Te'o realizes something is up, and then the interest in "her" spikes right at the beginning of the football season to create a better story. No one likes a socially awkward middle linebacker from Hawaii, but they do like a religious athlete from ND who is enduring a long-distance relationship with a bright, attractive female.

those numbers are likely exaggerated by teo for sympathy and to get more people to buy into the "gf" angle. in all likelihood he probably talked to this person rarely over the phone (1-2 a week) and most nights over IM.

I think it's pretty obvious Te'o greatly exaggerated the relationship.

Then SVP is right - there was an end game and he wasn't the victim here. NFL teams would want to do a full mental evaluation of the kid if thinking about drafting him.
Just remember - this is just day 1 post Deadspin article - eventually more people will talk.

That just shows what a pathetic state of affairs we have currently for the college football landscape. Heisman winners are voted on because of "hardships overcome", national title game participants are selected because of the "eye test", etc.
Well, Eric Reid did garner many first team all-american selections.

I was listening to one of my favorite podcast "The Solid Verbal" and this morning they compared this story to "Tim Tebow being caught in bed with Donald Trump & Hulk Hogan with a mound of blow on the bed."

Te'o embellished. He probably considered this girl an online acquaintance, and MAYBE, if he's really a weirdo, his girlfriend.
Anyway, word got out that his GF died, and he liked the attention. He told the story. He got great feedback. And the lie, like all lies, grew with time.

That's my position. I think once he found out she wasn't real (provided he didn't have a hand in inventing her in the first place), he continued to build up the story. The letters, the roses, the "love of my life", the all-night phone calls - I think all of that came from Te'o.

I think regardless of what facts come out of this story, there will be 32 different psych evals done during or around the combine. After Jovan Belcher, teams will think twice about mental health issues.
