I really don't see how anyone could be that stupid to not find out that she didn't exist when he said he cared so much about her, but not going to visit at all? There is no doubt in my mind that he was in on this.

I am leaning towards this. Him being in on it is certainly possible and maybe even probable.

My current prediction based on the info we know:

He initially didn't know he was being catfished. At some point, he found out. Either on his own or someone let him in on the gag. He was embarrassed so he kept it going. Maybe not so much in reality, but more for appearances to save face. At some point later he tried to "kill her off" to have an out and he planned to do so right before a game. (at this point I'm not sure whether or not he was aware of his grandmother's death before or after the fake gf "died") Perhaps he did it in some dumbass scheme to maybe generate hype, as if this was a movie or some shite (hey, the official version makes him look much dumber). After he has a good performance in an upset over MSU and the stories break, He and ND start getting some hype. His story is starting to be picked up. He has to do interviews. He has to tell his story.

From this point, the story just grows and grows. Likely few people are aware of this initially, but as the season progresses and the story grows more people are included. Te'o's family (dad), his teammates (If that one anon ND player knew, he wasn't the only one), etc.

But the thing is, this isn't a movie. He didn't dupe ESPN/America, win all the awards and get all the fame, and ride off into the sunset. Even before the season ended, he knew the jig was up. He knew that people were getting close and shite was about to fall apart. He knew Deadspin and ESPN knew. He had to let ND in the know.

At this point, he either let them know the whole truth, or more likely, he fed them the story we heard from the AD tonight. That he was catfished (as he actually was initially) and had no idea until right before he told them.



All that said, a presser from Te'o and an interview with the guy that ran the twitter account would make things a little more clear.

Because they don't want to get fired if they are wrong. Same reason only Deadspin was willing to run the story.

It's a tough line to walk for more traditional media. Deadspin has little to lose and message board posters have nothing at stake.

lol That's slightly different. He's got to work with Golic. Plus he's probably met the AD through Golic and wants to keep the relationship alive. Also probably help get the story out of the news. Everyone has an agenda.
