I'm starting to believe he developed an online relationship with this girl and then she "died", as far as he knew. But during the process of the relationship and the "death", he tells his family, teammates, and even some members of the media about her. Then, feeling kinda like a tool that he has never met this girl, he starts to lie about meeting her and what not to his family and teammates.
All of a sudden he turns into a superstar and the media being the media, can't help it but to turn the story of tragedy into an inspirational story of perseverance. They start asking family and friends about the relationship who tell the media what Manti has told them.
This causes him to have to lie more and more in order to keep it all going and for them to not learn that he had an "internet" girlfriend. I guess he just assumed and hoped that nobody would look into it.
TLDR, Manti got trolled like a mother fricker and exaggerated the details of his relationship so he wouldn't look like a tool with a "online relationship".
