The name didn't strike me immediately but the other guy killed was Jose Castillo who played 15 games with 5he Astros in 2008

Not at his age. Cole is younger. Would rather extend him. 3 years 75.
yeah that sounds great, it's just totally unrealistic. Cole would never agree to that. Patrick Corbin just got $140 million, you think he's better than Cole?

RIP to both Valbaw and Castillo. Very sad news to wake up to indeed. Won't forget their times as an Astro.

Here's a whole mess of shite for your Monday morning
quote:
Josh Harrison had a year to forget in 2018, leading the Pirates to buy out the veteran infielder after the season and end a relationship that began in 2009. Nevertheless, no fewer than five teams have shown interest in Harrison this offseason, according to Fancred’s Jon Heyman, who lists the Astros and Giants among clubs that have at least considered the 31-year-old.
quote:
The Dodgers are also “all in” on the catcher market, as are the Astros and Mets, Olney reports. Any of those teams could find its answer with Pittsburgh’s Francisco Cervelli, for whom the Pirates are willing to consider offers, according to Olney.
quote:
Back to the Astros, who didn’t earnestly pursue righty Nathan Eovaldi in free agency, Olney relays. The two sides were a match on paper, Olney points out, as Eovaldi’s a Houston native and the Astros are seeking starting help. Eovaldi re-signed with the Red Sox this week on a four-year, $68MM deal, though, and the Astros continue to need a starter. There’s “one industry theory” that the Astros are more focused on upgrading via trade, which could point them to Syndergaard, Corey Kluber, Trevor Bauer or Zack Greinke, Olney notes.
quote:
It doesn’t appear as if the Astros will make a push for Japanese left-hander Yusei Kikuchi, The Athletic’s Jake Kaplan reports
quote:
Also from Kaplan’s piece, he details the Astros’ most notable needs heading into the Winter Meetings, namely another starting pitcher and another bat, preferably a left-handed hitter for lineup-balance purposes. (Though GM Jeff Luhnow has said of his hitter search, “We’re not going to be wed to it having to be a lefty or a righty or having it be a specific position
quote:
The Astros have been in touch with the White Sox about Jose Abreu, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports. Abreu has been on Houston’s radar before, including at last year’s trade deadline. Latest reports suggest that the Sox may not part with Abreu in the offseason (if at all) since they’d be selling low in the wake of a somewhat disappointing season
quote:
Speaking of first base targets, Fancred Sports’ Jon Heyman reports (Twitter link) that the Astros included pitching prospects Cionel Perez and J.B. Bukauskas in talks with the Diamondbacks about Paul Goldschmidt, before Arizona sent Goldschmidt to the Cardinals.

I have no idea why they are so infatuated with abreu.

#MNTwins are a new team in the mix for Nelson Cruz. The Goldy trade may have helped clarify things. Astros, Rays also in. White Sox possibly.

I’ll go ahead and say it....
We’re alrady deep into the Winter Meetings and there’s been absolutely no moves whatsoever because Luhnow wants to old cat lady hoard prospects. Luhnow just won’t make deals for this club. Underperforming

It needed to be said.

There are free agent options out there if he doesn't want to give up prospects... he isn't even doing anything there either. Guess Crane closed the wallet this offseason

Did anyone read what caused the crash that killed him?

What was first reported by sports media as a car crash due to a rock that rolled onto the highway, was later confirmed as a robbery ploy by thieves, leading to the detention of four people who were found to have possession of the players' personal belongings. One of the two survivors of the SUV accident, Carlos Rivero, attended a chapel honoring Valbuena while "wearing dark sunglasses and bearing a small bruise on his forehead," according to ESPN.

Players of Venezuelan baseball team Los Cardenales de Lara, carry on their shoulders the coffin of their teammate Luis Valbuena, who died in a crash caused when thieves put a stone in the highway to disable his van, during a mass at the Antonio Herrera Gutierrez stadium in Barquisimeto, Venezuela on December 7, 2018. - Four people have been arrested in Venezuela in connection with the deaths of former American big league baseball players Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo. According to police reports stone criminals positioned on the road in a bid to rob the van caused the crash, a common assault strategy in crisis-wracked Venezuela.

Just heard a report of a 3-team trade in the works which involves Realmulto going to the Mets, Syndergaard going to the Yankees. No mention of what the marlins would get.
If that trade happens, in my opinion, Crane &Co will almost be forced to make a big splash deal. If nothing more than to keep the natives from revolting.

Anyone get a feeling we're lying in the weeds waiting for Harper?
NYY are out, Stl is out, Cubs can't afford him, Chi Sox aren't ready.
That leaves Philly, Washington, LAD, possibly SF.
ETA - throwing in the Angels. They could pull it off financially.

The Astros began last season with a team-record $182MM payroll, the fifth-highest mark in the league, but after falling short of their bid to repeat as World Series champs, there’s a possibility that payroll could rise even higher by the start of 2019, according to MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart. They won’t extend beyond the luxury tax mark, but Owner Jim Crane is giving the green light to inch closer to the $206MM tax line should the right deals come along via trades or free agency.

I sure hope not. Maybe if it’s front loaded. I’d hate to see white Carlos Lee running around the OF when he’s 36-40.

frick it... sign Harper and Morton and rent a back brace for Correa. Bring on spring training.
Posted on 12/11/18 at 9:10 am to CQQ
My point being is that I hope they aren’t paying someone washed up $25M/year late in his career while they can’t handle the payroll for the rest of the club.
How many time have we seen that same scenario play out?
I just think it’s too much of a commitment to one player and not the entire franchise.
