Today’s frustrating stat of the day:
quote:
wOBA is a linear weight-based statistic that estimates a player's offensive contributions per plate appearance. It's based on the idea that each offensive event, like a single or home run, has an expected number of runs it produces.
quote:
A wOBA of .320 is considered average, while values above .400 are considered excellent and values below .300 are considered poor.

Nah man. That strike out rate is about to go through the roof. We already have that, but much cheaper.
Our outfield is Dubon, Jake and Chas. That gives you all the strikeouts and none of the production.

Not that Jake and Chas are bad fielders but I’d atleast sign a Kevin Kiermaier type (I know he’s old) that will give you an elite defender while being worthless at the plate
I don’t fault him for doing it and going for the ring, but think about how much brighter our future would look if we never make that JV trade with the Mets

Are those two prospects doing much? I could’ve sworn I looked up Gilbert and he was either hurt or playing terribly. We need Melton to make a splash

Will have to look again but I think Gilbert missed a ton of time with an injury and the first baseman (can't even remember his name) made it up to AA and had an abysmal batting average but I think had good power and got on base at a decent rate.
ETA:
Ryan Clifford hit .228 between Single A and AA but had 27 doubles, 19 HR and 95 walks for a .372 OBP as a 20 year old.
Gilbert played 62 games and hit .205

Clifford slashed 228/372/421 between High A and AA last year. Struck out 160 times and walked 95 in 129 total games. He's still just 21 so don't want to write him off just yet.
Gilbert only played 62 games last year and was dreadful. Was pretty bad in the AFL too.
Both are still in MLB's top 100 prospects list, but not sure when the last time that was updated. Big years for both of those guys if they can stay healthy.
Whoops, you beat me to it. I was curious as well since it was brought up so wanted to look it up anyway.

I mean we can’t seriously be considering not acquiring an OF right? I guess we’re just waiting for Bregs to make his decision before we do anything else? I’m guessing Boston is doing the same. They’re in the OF market as well

Where is Jake Marisnick these days?

Arenado blocks Trade to Houston
Damn, the Cards were willing to send $15-20mil along with him. Would have been a nice little deal for an elite defender that could be helped out by the Crawford Boxes. But still him blocking the move is probably for the best.
Oh well, just go get an outfielder and 1st baseman now.

If they are truly out on Bregs, it's time to jump the line and grab these positions while the big spenders wait on Bregs.

I find it hilarious he was going to approve a deal to the angels though

I don’t think it would have been a little deal if they were sending 15-20 million. Go out and get a first baseman and/or outfielder and try to hold on to some of the little prospect capital we have

Sorry, little deal meaning dollars and years left on Nolan’s contract.
I’m hoping the Cards return gets leaked to see what the prospect hit would have been. I wouldn’t imagine Matthews, Melton, or Smith but if it would have been one of them I’m very much glad it fell through.
Now Nightengale says Astros are “very much” in play for Bregman. Whatever that means, maybe a new offer going out to him?

Someone has to explain how Crane is “cheap” to me.
As far as Arenado, good riddance. He’s coming in hot on his age 34 season and his numbers clearly trending down. Based on his choice teams for who he would approve, he wants to be in Southern California or close to NY.
Don’t even care. All this report does is stir up the dummies that whine about a cheap owner.

Says everything you need to know about him
What he really needs is Coors Field
But I'm not at all surprised that we would pull the trigger on that deal with them picking up that much salary, which also tells you everything you need to know about him
This blocked trade also served a purpose in our dealings with Bregman.

I will take Bregman back on a 7 year 175 deal or something all day vs giving up prospects for three years of Arenado. Will be a huge blessing if that’s how it plays out
