Final ESPN offseason grade:
quote:
Houston Astros: C
Key additions: RHP Tatsuya Imai, RHP Mike Burrows, RHP Ryan Weiss, SS Nick Allen, OF Joey Loperfido
Key departures: LHP Framber Valdez, INF/OF Mauricio Dubon, OF Jacob Melton, C Victor Caratini, OF Jesus Sanchez
With Valdez leaving in free agency and Ronel Blanco, Brandon Walter and Hayden Wesneski all gone for most or all of the season after Tommy John surgeries, the Astros' priority was the rotation. Imai signed for three years and $54 million -- or about half of the three-year, $115 million deal that Valdez eventually signed with the Tigers. That's right in line with the projections that see Imai as about half as valuable as Valdez. Burrows comes over from the Pirates, where he had a 3.94 ERA as a rookie in 19 starts, so that looks like a nice pickup. Weiss never reached the majors with the Diamondbacks or Royals but had a big year in Korea and could factor in the rotation as well. All of that is fine, but the Astros didn't address an offense that scored 30 fewer runs than the AL average. A healthy Yordan Alvarez will help, but the third base logjam with Carlos Correa and Isaac Paredes still exists -- and even if Paredes turns into a sort of utility guy, it's a poor use of resources. Maybe that trade is still to come as, after swapping Sanchez for Loperfido, general manager Dana Brown said, "We're not done." The Sanchez trade saves about $6 million, so the payroll sits about $15 million below the first tax threshold.

Looks like FanDuel has “our” O/U for wins at 86.5. Guess they expect LMJ to do some serious work on the bump and maybe even at the plate. That’ll be triple shifts if you count his barista work. Is he up to the challenge?

None of the fragile mfers on this team should participate.

At the risk of banishment for stealing a DAT elder’s insult, I really and truly believe that Sanchez is “cheeks”.

MLB midwinter Power Rankings from ESPN:
11. Houston Astros
Final 2025 ranking: 12
Way-too-early 2026 ranking: 23
After injuries ravaged three-fifths of the rotation in 2025, the Astros have added reinforcements: Tatsuya Imai from Japan, Mike Burrows from the Pirates and Ryan Weiss, who starred in Korea. But it looks almost certain that free agent Framber Valdez is leaving and nothing has been done to improve a mediocre offense that's too right-handed and too dependent on a healthy Yordan Alvarez. A Carlos Correa/Isaac Paredes logjam at third base also leads to some defensive issues as Alvarez, Paredes and Jose Altuve can't all DH at the same time. -- Schoenfield

Someone give us the rundown on Burrows
Cousin of Joe Burrows. Shoved against the Astros back in June. One of these may be true, zero could be true, but they both are not true.
Congratulations to TigerFan91!

McTaggart:
In the parlance of our times, I’d say this squad is “cooked”.
quote:
Some tibdits from Espada's media session:
- Altuve not made a decision about WBC participation.
- He wants to avoid using Hader/Abreu for 4 outs early in season.
- Alvarez will DH most of the season for health purposes.
- Altuve's defensive future uncertain.
In the parlance of our times, I’d say this squad is “cooked”.

Once the roster is set maybe have a summit at Superior on Highland to do some pre-bitching

Free agency begins at 4pm today. Guess we will hide and watch. Probably for the best.
