I’m kind of intrigued by the earlier mention of a trade for ohtani. The idea of using him as another left handed power hitter in the lineup, something we desperately need, and also as a power pitcher. If JV leaves you can use ohtani and with our depth you can keep him fresh.
The obvious questions are what would it take to get him, what kind of deal could you get him to sign, the kind crane likes for 5 years or the massive 9 or 10 year deal that kills teams. Also, would he want to come to Houston. And lastly, do you only put him at DH or can you train him to play first base?
I don’t know. Maybe he’s not what we’re looking for. Maybe he’s too much of a unicorn.

The latter. And we probably wouldn't be able to sign him anyway. He's destined to be Dodger or Yankee.

Ohtani would be an awesome get and the response from the baseball writers mafia would be epic.

Verlander is an entirely different discussion. What my comments are based on is the fact that with the tax implications surrounding his next deal, we will definitely know if all things being equal, he wants to truly be in Houston and how much he values that
The Astros also offer him depth to keep fresh between starts and skip starts whenever needed, and a WS quality bullpen and hitting to help him rack up more Ws
If he truly wants to make his way up the record books Houston is a great place to do it

Yes, agreed
So let’s see what happens

The Athletic Dodgers writers put together a proposed trade package for Ohtani straight up and they come up with this
#26 MLB prospect Bobby Miller (Dodgers #2)
#41 MLB prospect Miguel Vargas (Dodgers #3)
#42 MLB prospect Michael Busch (Dodgers #4)
#66 MLB prospect Andy Pages (Dodgers #5)
#74 MLB prospect Ryan Pepiot (Dodgers #6)
Dodgers # 11 Landon Knack
Dodgers #14 Maddox Bruns
7 prospects, 5 of them top 100. For a guy who's a free agent after the season. We don't have that prospect capital to begin with but beyond that theres no Crane gives up the uber deal he'd require and Ohtani likely wouldn't resign with us anyway. He's destined for Chavez ravine one way or another

Also an extremely good defense. He needs a defense to get the wins he wants.
But in the end, it may just be money. I'm ok with that.

There is no way that it will take that much for a rental Ohtani. If you’re getting 1.5 seasons for ohtani, then yes, he will pull a huge return.
But half a season. No way.

Should give him a call... and ask him about that fly ball in game 2 of the 2017 World Series, would that have been a home run with roof closed?

After the media dragging him through the mud to the point that most non-Astros fans hate him, Peter Gammons article in The Athletic today all but exonerates Altuve in the “cheating scandal”. We all already knew this, and it’s a little too late now, Pete.

Gammons wasn’t as bad as others. Rosenthal, Olney, Drellich, Passan, McCullough and Carig, just to name a few, can rot in hell.
