Maybe Strom saw something he likes?

I was thinking last night that this must be the only reason he was part of the deal.

50/50 that Buxton is even healthy for the playoffs, but he does have another year.

Makes him cheaper that he's got the hand fracture recovery going on. He'll be ready to roll by September as I read it. If Straw went out in the trade, we can get a look at Meyers in the meantime. All of this year is about October.

Will cost more but down for it.

Montero was part of the deal because it made the LaForce/Graveman money work plus a slight gain in tax room for us. If he actually can be fixed to be a competent middle reliever or shipped right off again this week to make another trade's money work, it's a bonus.

James Click was on @SportsTalk790 and was asked if the loss vs Seattle helped pull the trigger on the trade.

Click said it "added some sense of urgency"

He also said the hope was a trade would be a boost to the clubhouse and prove to players they will make moves.

Our baby GM is growing up.

Yeah I think Montero was strictly an accounting measure

Should be, but he's made of glass. And that extra year adds to his price tag. Turner's too.

Of course but it's what also makes Buxton even more valuable. He's a more palatable risk because his injuries haven't been chronic in nature.

I'd argue Turner would be highly worth it for us in particular for this year and next because he can start at SS or CF but he's gonna be super expensive.

He can shag fly balls at MacGregor baseball park and work on his routes while he gets over his sniffles

The Astros and top prospects getting g hurt for extended periods go together like peas and carrots. Protect Korey Lee.

More interesting info on Buxton. The Twins beat writer with tAthletic says the reported offer they made Buxton was acceptable guaranteed money for his agent ($80 million over 7-years) but MIN did not offer adequate incentives.

This kind of deal with better incentives sounds like just the type Crane and Co. would actually agree to do. The guarantee is low while you don't care about paying a ton more incentives if he's actually earning them.

He'll be fine. Probably.

there are other CF options available.

I hate myself for saying this. But I truly don't care about an attempt to upgrade CF. This team can win a World Series with Straw in CF.

It can not win the World Series without substantial improvement in the bullpen.

It will not win a playoff series with Dusty Baker as manager.

This ain't big thang. So you send him to the Arizona Fall League and whatever offseason options like winter ball or instructionals.

Might as well pull the plug on upgrading, then, because he’s not going anywhere this year.
