They need to have a fire sale. They don’t have enough of anything (pitching or hitting) to sign one or two players by the deadline that will make the needle move.

I think the only virtue of not selling now is that we would have a different GM doing the selling in the winter. I think you’ve got great conditions for a sale at the deadline. Lots of desperate teams, few sellers, and a looming lockout that may induce teams to taking basically a pay day loan for a playoff run.

They’ve got 1.5 starting pitchers and anywhere from 3-4 competent major league hitters on a nightly basis. Sell, sell, sell.

I mean, here are the moves a smart owner who understands the situation would make.
Fire the idiot manager today and see if that sparks the team (it certainly cannot hurt).
If no spark or a continued fall, fire Brown and let the top front office person handle a fire sale. If the team gets hot, tell Brown to go get reinforcements.
But I don't see any headlines about the Astros shitcanning Espada like a competent franchise should have done between yesterday evening and this morning so...

We all know how this saga will end. We will play just shy of awful long enough to stay a few games out of a wild card spot. The ownership and management will convince themselves that adding a couple pieces will somehow make this terrible team better and in the playoff hunt. From there, they will either continue to suck and miss the playoffs. Or by some long shot of a miracle, they make the playoffs but get bounced early.
Crane, brown, Espada all have zero clue that this team is NOT capable of competing at the highest level. And that fact alone is troublesome.

That might be a bit over the top for some (many) who have been in La La Land to handle all in one post. And while there may have been a spark to help those with the incurable case of hopium, it would have been weeks back.
There is only one course of correct action at this point, and it's not ideal given no true direction going forward, absent a coordinator.

I can understand the owner, GM, and manager just floating along in less than mediocrity, but not some you guys.

I've been advocating for a sale for most of this season.
It's just time, we have entirely too many "just good enough" or AAAA players that hit and pitch with this team.
Even if you don't do a complete tear down, the next 2 weeks is a really good time to capitalize on the very few valuable assets we have to give the farm system a boost and get us on a path for a competent GM to do something over the next few years.
If you pull the plug soon enough, and hire that competent GM, you may just be able to capitalize on Yordan's peak years and give time for some of the promising (albeit very few) minor leaguers to become something.
It's clear that Crane isn't going to spend us out of this situation (and I'm fine with it), it'll have to be rebuilt again and there is no time like the present to start

For me it’s more of a case of the chances of a miracle run, however infinitesimal they are, are still higher than the current ownership/management turning this around long term. I’ve been on record of saying Crane is irreparably broken and I’m standing by that.
He has downgraded in every major management position since the scandal. And I’m not saying Click was bad, just not as good as Luhnow. His choices for GM and Field manager since then speak for themselves. The hitting coaches were fired, and they bring in a new guy with essentially the same philosophy. The medical guy was fired and they promote from within after all the injury frickery. He took advice from completely out of touch former players. The biggest deals we’ve made in the last couple of years have been “brother-in-law” deals with players Crane was close to.
I have no trust in them whatsoever.

If you approach this trade deadline correctly you can rebuild and retool without bottoming out.
This relies on Javier, Blanco, and those guys staying healthy and a healthy Carlos in 27.Unless someone offers you the world for Yordan, if that happens send out Brown and Spaghetti too
