Lots of people fantasize about tanking. The truth is that the Astros are historically fortunate for how 2011-2014 turned out.

Pretty much every single prospect besides Mark Appel became an all star, AND we had a few nobodies turn into superstars (at least for a little while)

We don't need to tank or rebuild. We need just the right amount of position prospect gold with the continued pitching development edge. Not signing donkeys past their primes to tie up salary would be helpful as well.

That said, trading Tucker was not universally loved but it's looking like a genius move. It's bold to sell if you think you can get the right return.

The decision with Framber will be fascinating. He's an awesome innings horse but is he destined to break down in his next contract?

Jeff Luhnow is unquestionably the GOAT.

Think about even “depth pieces” who are having success like teoscar Hernandez and Ramon laureono even if not with the Astros

I will say though that one of his greatest achievements was a scouting our own system.

We spent “big prospects” for guys like greinke, verlander and cole and the only one who amounted to anything was musgrove who was going to be relegated to the pen for the Astros at that time

100%

We had a soft rebuild and the team is better than last year. I think 91 is right, you get some of these starters back + Yed and we may be cooking. We may not. But I’d sure as hell rather be in contention than pray a rebuild effort goes anywhere.

I mean to be fair he was a mid/late first round pick, he didn’t NEED to be a star like Correa, LMJ, Bregs, Tucker

The Luhnow regime hit on pretty much every hitter we needed to hit on, and invested the right money when needed for Pitching. Not sure you could have scripted it out any better.

Plus the Pitcher development pipeline has been phenomonal.

JWho is right, we need to quit spending money on old dudes who don’t provide future value.

4 teams of 4 which translates into 8 teams to 2. Really weird dynamic. Apologies as I’m too drunk to taste this chicken

They need to lock up some of these guys long term who are on the younger side. Pena and Brown are the top 2 obviously

No I agree with you. Luhnow was awesome and I still wish Crane had just gone with the suspension and just picked right up in 2021 and gotten the band back together.

The only thing that’s aggravating is that it seemed a lot of good trades got dangled out there over the years and the only sticking point was Fletcher Watley, yet Luhnow wouldn’t budge.

No, but I get it. He looked like an absolute unicorn there for a couple years, a homegrown Gerrit Cole replacement when it was obvious he was leaving

A few thoughts as this team is really playing pretty good ball right now

- they are winning in a different way than they have in the past. This is the first time in a while I can say the Astros are a good defensive team.

- on that note I hope Melton hits enough to stick around because that is one damn good defensive outfield they’d be trotting out a lot of the time

- as Adam said the Astros have done an incredible job of scouting their system through the years. I was pissed when they dealt Gilbert for Verlander for instance. I figured he’d be an established everyday CFer at this point. The guys they’ve kept recently who have turned into semi big prospects have panned out an incredible rate, and kept improving at the ML level. Brown, Pena, Yainer are pretty much the top 100 listed prospects in the last three years that they haven’t traded and have established themselves on the roster. Pena and Brown are the two most valuable players on this roster right now.
This gives me a ton of hope for guys like Cam and Melton (who I’d be pretty shocked if they dealt)

- the pitching development infrastructure built under Ludlow has persisted. It hasn’t been pretty outside Brown and Framber the last few weeks but they’ve pieced it together. I think Colton Gordon has some staying power, even if it’s just a back end steady starter. Lefties who can throw strikes and command offspeed are one of the most bankable player types in pro baseball

I know we get off on shitting on these guys and they have some serious flaws, but wanted to inject some positivity as they reel off some wins

I think he was a really talented guy and the 2020 adderall suspension fricked him up, one of the few they missed on, Hader is another, we never really needed a Carlos Gomez

What a fricking gem McHugh was though. We had the market cornered on fixing pitchers for awhile, still to a certain extent now, but it was ABSURD for awhile. McHugh, Cole, Pressley, I’m sure there’s others I’m forgetting

Charlie
Peacock was a trade throw in
Even recently Montero was another trade throw in who was incredible in a championship year. He didn’t offer himself that contract

I know we’ve been spending at the top of the league for the last 7 plus years, but to do what we’ve done without any real marquee free agents has been incredible.

Just about everything has been through drafting, developing, and trading

I take one game off to tend to some family business, and the DAT turns into a circle jerk?

Ryno, WTF?

Just like 5 Deep giving up the lead today, the inevitable losing streak on the way with all this petting and general optimism taking place

We might as well had scored 10 runs
