Rome said they’re gonna play a man short tonight.

Hopefully this signals the end of Jeff Bagwell, GM role.

When you are sitting on the bench to allow a strikeout-prone rookie and an over-weight first baseman that swings the bat as well as a 3-legged hippopotamus can hoola-hoop, it might be time to hang up the cleats.

I’m surprised they optioned Abreu instead of Singleton solely based on Abreu’s 19.5m/yr salary. Carrying 6 in the OF is certainly a choice (Tucker, Chas, Meyers, Dubon, Yordan, Loperfido). Obviously Dubon is utility, Yordan can DH and Loperfido can play 1B, but it’s just an interesting move to not send Singleton down in this situation. But getting Abreu on the right track instead of benching is also the right move long term I think. Lots of moving pieces with this. Can only hope it pays off

I’d be really shocked if he makes it back to the roster.
Going to Florida isn’t going to turn back the clock 5 years on his swing speed.
ETA: This feels like a mutual parting without them straight up DFA’ing him.

The end game may be a mutually agreeable buyout. If he even agreed to space out the rest of what he's owed over extra years, that'd be a huge plus.

Yes THAT will help, and definitely couldn’t have been done with him on the active roster.
I can’t see him coming back.

Dana down there helping:
"Nice swing, Jose. Woulda been a tough play for the shortstop to make. Hey, what are your plans for after baseball?"

There not sending Singleton out to clear waivers, that shouldn't come as a surprise, but sending Abreu to basically Instruction is really surprising.

I didn't even think that could happen without him going through waivers. Weird times.

Well this is great news to see
Let’s enjoy it all for a few more hours til we get the Hunter Brown experience tonight
Also not looking forward to Jose Ramirez destroying us like it seems he always does when we play Cleveland

Abreu has never been sent to the minors so he has all of his options remaining but he has enough service time that he has to agree to it.

And apparently, he did agree to it. He still gets paid and he can say he's working on stuff even if he knows it's over.
Certainly a bit of good news.

Agree. Having him rot on the bench doesn't make things better. Have him get some ABs/more practice might help with confidence. Who knows?
