You do realize McCann would be the primary C if we sign Lucroy??

So we’re going to pay Lucroy 2 years 24 million (which is what he’s projected to get) to be a backup catcher and Part time DH?

Gattis is a much better hitter and costs significantly less. Spend the money on the bullpen and look internally for hitters unless you can make a BIG upgrade.

ETA: Lucroy was dead last in framing runs and 5th from last in blocking runs in all of baseball.

Luhnow may look to get a steal on a 3 to 4 year deal with Lucroy, who may be in line to take a hometown discount while chasing a ring or two. Maybe less than $10 million AAV but more money upfront like the Yuli contract.

Maybe, I just think the money is best spent on the bullpen.

We’ve got a backlog of young hitters and I’m pretty ok rolling with Centeno as a backup catcher.

ETA: or Stassi for that matter

I should have added, I don't think they keep Gattis and his salary if a proven catcher is signed to a significant deal.

Plus, dumping Gattis opens the door for Moran/White/Davis to duke it out for at bats.

I don't think Lucroy would be a backup. I imagine it would be a dead even split between him and McCann. I'm guessing they want to rest McCann as much as possible to keep him fresh and want a competent guy to split those ABs. I don't really want Centeno or Stassi playing 70-80 games

wouldn't hate Lucroy. He's consistently been one of the better hitting catchers in the league over his career. His 2015 season was very similar to his 2017. He bounced back in 2016 to .292 with 24 homers.

Platoon he and McCann and move Gattis back to full time DH. One area of weakness in our minor league system is C. Centeno and Stassi are non prospects. Garrett Stubbs struggled at Corpus and Fresno. Jake Rogers is only at High A. McCann has an option for 2019 that's unlikely to vest. At that point, we let McCann walk and have one of the better hitting catchers as a stop gap option on a fairly cheap deal.

Stassi is out of minor league options so its likely he's not kept around.

Rogers was in the Verlander deal. McCann's 2019 option vests with 90 games played next year which is another reason why I think they will pursue a catcher hard.

Trading for Grandal would be interesting as well

Nvm I guess McCann's option is 1000 plate appearances between 17 and 18 and 90 games in 2018 so there's no chance that's happening. Regardless I think they will pursue a catcher. If we're going to make a change position player wise I think that makes the most sense

Looks to me like it vests if all three of those things happen. He had 399 plate appearances last year so he'd need 600 in 2018 to reach 1,000. He's never reached 600 in his career.

Yeah you're right, I hadn't seen the part about the plate appearances. No chance that happens

Depth was a key factor for us last year. We were able to rotate guys in and out of the lineups without a huge production drop off. Lucroy would be a continuance of that depth but also ensure some stability going into 2019. We'll need a catcher and the 2019 free agent C suck. I think going after Lucroy on a somewhat cheaper deal this year would be about affordably addressing 2019 as much as adding to 2018.

I agree. If McCann were to go down for an extended we would be in some serious trouble at catcher. As far as where money will be spent, it's hard to say without knowing what Crane is willing to spend this offseason. I don't want Lucroy instead of a bullpen arm but I don't know it's an either or thing. If we are going to spend on a position player this offseason I think this makes sense for the reasons you mentioned

Watched last few innings of game 2 and 5 again last night. Words can’t express how hopeless things felt in game 2. We couldn’t do anything for the first 7 innings and going back to Houston down 0-2 seemed so inevitable. Absolutely insane we scored 4 innings in a row to finish it off

Game 5 still blows my mind. Come back from 4-0, just to "blow it" giving up 3 more runs. Then the absurd amount of HRs. Team of destiny gunna team of destiny.

Then springer blowing it then unblowing with a massive bomb.

And correa with the GOAT celebration. It’s great that he said he didn’t remember it because I think it was the raw emotion of everyone watching “hit...go... go go go go..yes yes frick yes”

That really was the strength of the team. The lineup simply feasted on bullpen arms. Especially early in the season.

Bullpen arms typically rely on high velocity fastballs and we feasted on high velocity fastballs as a team

The home run from Marwin off Jansen in Game 2 may have been my favorite. I’ve never gone from deflated to through the roof so fast as a sports fan. I had pretty much accepted the game was over despite the earlier run off Jansen.

Springer’s bomb was incredible because of how hard he hit it and Morrow’s reaction where he didn’t even turn around and just stared into space. It reminded me of Pujols bomb off Lidge

I'm still not healed up yet from the celebration behind the Crawford boxes on that walkoff in game 5.

We signed One of the WS hero’s Chuck Salt a year ago today.

What a great signing by Luhnow
