Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris Officially Ineligible for 2026 NFL Season

Struggling to understand the NFL’s rationale here and I can’t find much of an explanation anywhere.
Is it because they requested releases from their NFL teams to pursue NIL deals with LSU?

Harris and Wright both played for Kiffin when Kiffin was the head coach at Ole Miss. Neither player was drafted to the NFL after the 2025 season, but both players signed with NFL teams ahead of training camps.
quote:
After being released, both players attempted to rejoin the NCAA with Kiffin at LSU, ultimately setting up a showdown with LSU against the SEC and NCAA regarding their eligibility.

Seems like just some collusion with the NCAA to punish these players to make an example of anyone doing something like this in the future (which wasn’t really going to happen anyway)

As someone said, it's for the 2026 NFL season.
I don't blame the NFL. Pick a lane. They could just as easily stayed in the NFL free agent pool until someone picked them up, if ever. They chose not to. Cool, do the college thing.
Try again in 2027 as a FA.

That’s honestly the best I could come up with personally.
I’d like to give the league the benefit of the doubt here. It’s a highly unusual situation but I would hope they had some rule that “kinda sorta” addressed it and they made what they felt was the right call based on that.

Is it any different than a UDFA getting cut, going to play in Canada and then coming back to a practice squad spot the same season?
Unless the league is pretending that CFB is still an “amateur sport”, I’d say no there is no difference.

I wouldn't call that the same. The CFL is still a professional league. According to an internet search, the NFL doesn't allow it anyway. CFL ends in late October and that cannot sign with NFL teams that same year. They can start getting signed for the next NFL season in mid November.
If I was the NFL, I wouldn't encourage jumping back and forth between college and pros. I'm not having a hard time with that, though I can understand if others disagree with it.

That isn't allowed

Well I just learned something. I feel like that wasn’t always the case but maybe I’m wrong.
Guess that’s the answer then.

True, but that rule only applies to the CFL
There is this clause in the CBA:
quote:
Section 5. Other Professional Leagues: No player who is under contract in another football league is eligible to sign an NFL Player Contract or a Practice Squad Player Contract until the termination or expiration of his contract in the other league.
While the term "another football league" is not specifically defined, this statement falls under the header of "Other Professional Leagues". Surely, the NFL is not contending college football qualifies as a "Professional League"? (which would open up a whole other can of worms
I don't see anything in the CBA that specifically prohibits a team signing these players. The Browns waived Wright. He was eligible to be signed by any other NFL team at that point. However, he didn't. At that point I don't see how he is anything but a free agent as he is not under a contract with any NFL team. His agent also stated they made it a point for him to not sign any agreement with any other team, including LSU.

Seriously?
I think its pretty obvious they decided to give up eligibility in the NFL to push the boundaries via the courts on what the NCAA was going to allow/accept in terms of eligibility.
This is similar to Mike Williams and Maurice Clarett back in 2004.

Not similar at all. Williams and Clarett were suing to be eligible early then their cases failed so they just had to wait. These guy were obviously eligible and now the league trying to teach them a lesson probably with some direction from the NCAA.

Hence the similarity. Their suit failed and now they have to sit out a year. Both scenarios athletes trying to be a trailblazer; suit fails and they are ineligible to go back.

The NFL isn't "teaching them a lesson" they are basically clarifying the rules before it becomes an issue. This decision is in line with CBA rule cited in the post above and I would bet there are rules in the CBA on who is eligible from college as well.

No because Williams and Clarett's suit was with the NFL about draft eligibility. Wright and Harris' had nothing to do with the NFL. You could argue Wright chose out of the NFL to pursue returning to college but Harris was already cut by the Saints and not getting looks from any other team. I doubt anyone wants to pick him up but the league is fricking them over to prove a point.

No shite . . . You can't see the forest through the trees! Here are similarities:
Both scenarios have a lawsuit that failed and both scenarios have the athletes who pushed the eligibility boundaries on acceptable norms and found themselves ineligible to play that year.
Nowhere, did I say the lawsuits were for the same reason.

How does that work with private contracts like Daejon Love

I don't blame the NFL not wanting to encourage jumping back and forth. These players didn't make it in the NFL this year and tried going back to get their money in college and unfortunately took a risk. Bad advice from someone but I don't think NFL and NCAA "screwed them".
