What happened to the cubs??
They had the best record in all of baseball a couple weeks ago and are on the outside of the playoff picture now!

They have an entire starting rotation on the IL, and the bats have cooled off

Yep. Injuries to the rotation and to a few arms in the pen. Bats have cooled off.
The team could not lose for a 20 game stretch, now they can't buy a win.

White hotness far better than the actual caliber of their team (20-3)
Reversion to the mean made worse by injuries (2-13)
It's still a good team but they're where they should be after the pitching injuries

They lost Cade Horton early season who went 11-4 last year. And other pitchers.
I saw this today.
The 25-year-old right-hander acquired this offseason from Boston has pitched to a 0.75 ERA with 17 strikeouts in 12 innings at Triple-A since returning from injury.

As the Cubs have tended to do every year after 2016 - They have at least a month during the year where all of their players quit hitting at the same time.
It's really been painful to watch as a Cub fan, as outside of Michael Busch, no one is hitting. Bregmen is actually hitting......ok from an average standpoint but with zero slug - only singles. No one else is hitting at all.

This was always going to be our downfall. Thought the offense would do enough, but never felt confident we had what it takes for the whole season. Even during the winning streaks.
We have a bunch of streaky hitters and they’ve all decided to go cold at the same time.

Yes, I recall the Braves thread where they were feeling so great about their pitchers in the series against the Cubs, and I get it, I would have too were I a Braves fan, but the Cubs do this every year - you are correct, very streaky hitters but the worst part is they tend to do it all at the same time for at least one extended period a year. They had not hit the series before the Braves and continued the four after.

The Cubs have really struggled to draft and develop high end starting pitching for a while now. Even the group that won the WS, guys like Arrietta and Lester were outside acquisitions.
A ton of teams do. Pretty much every team that’s struggling currently can cite pitching injuries as an excuse for it. Some teams have the depth to get through it and others don’t, there’s the occasional few that get lucky

Yet the current streak of futility is much more on the offense, the pitching has kept us in most games.
Steele and Horton were both developed in the Cubs system - would love to have either or both.

They were so damn lucky on that winning stretch they had to go back to the mean. They won 3 straight games against my Reds in walkoff fashion. Unbelievable shite that was unsustainable. Half of their wins during their 10 game winning streak was by one run. The baseball gods always get even. Happened to my Reds this year also.
