Yes they were blowouts, but why the fuk would TV executives deliberately schedule their network's biggest game directly against one another??

The ND game should've easily been the afternoon game and the Penn State game should've been primetime. This trend of scheduling every marquee game against one another is also a relatively new.

Remember, The "Bush Push" ND vs USC game in 2005 was in fact an afternoon game... This makes no sense, either business wise for a network or strategy wise for the health of college football

It sucks for the viewers for sure, but I don't know why you expect NBC and ESPN/ABC to consul each other.

The ones that are REALLY terrible is when you have a great game at 8et on ABC and another great one at the same time on ESPN. Expect something like that to happen on week 10 with so many great matchups

Late Saturday afternoon is actually the optimal viewing time that garners the highest ratings. There's a reason why the SEC Championship Game has been played at 4:00 for the last 10+ years instead of 7:00 or 8:00.

One of the worst aspects of having a mediocre/bad team is that you are a slave to watching them over the 30 other better games being played at the time

Agree.

Penn State should always be a nightgame with their white-outs and USC/ND should always be an afternoon game.

In fact just like the Miami series, day games...all games at South Bend should be day games.

The first USC-ND night game was in 2011. It was the first night game played in South Bend in 21 years.

Then 2012 was another night game.

Then 2013 was another night game.

2015 was another damn night game at Notre Dame.

2017...another damn night game at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame didn't play night games forever...and now, they are acting like an SEC school.

This infatuation with night games is getting old.

Week 2 was ridicuous with Clem/Aub, UGA/ND, Stanford/USC, and OSU/Okla all at night.

This coming week is weird. There is no really good night game. Clem/GT is whatever. I guess it's just a down week.

Agreed. Penn State vs Ohio State is a 230 game this saturday. Should be on in primetime.

2:30pm is a fine time

That is when I prefer Alabama to play

Im guessing it will still be the highest rated game of the season

This upcoming Saturday is when everyone celebrates Halloween. Will probably be less viewers at night because of it. Thats why OSU/PSU, TCU/Iowa State, and Notre Dame/NCSU are all at 3:30.

Still better than the NFL’s tv schedule. At least you can pick any school that you want to watch

At least it's not NFL. I still can't believe that it's 2017, I live 2 hours away from my hometown in Michigan, but I literally can't watch my home state NFL team on television because I don't have Directv and live in Bears territory. How the hell does this make financial sense to have fans hungry to watch their team but can't? There has to be more money in the long run allowing tons of different channels to air games.

Actually most of the prime times games used to all be at 230

Once the networks saw you could have marquee games on a Sat night that's when the shift began.

ESPN led the way with all the marquee SEC matchups.
CBS kind of started it with the LSU Bama primetime games.

ABC top games were at 230 but then ESPN stepped in and started shifting the biggest game to primetime.

Notre Dame and NBC moved a couple games to primetime.
Fox joined the fun as well.

A lot of that is because Fox has the World Series too. If ESPN had the World Series, then that game would likely be primetime

All these games are in primetime bc it chews up a whole night and there really isn't any programming that could do better on a Saturday night...

I wish we could go back to the vast majority of games being played Saturday during the day. That's when LSU and Arizona State were really the only schools that played at night. By Saturday evening you knew what happened in college football and you could watch baseball playoffs or go out and do stuff without wondering about the game. LSU would have 5, 6, or 7 home games at night. Sometimes you'd have LSU at Tiger Stadium during the day for tv and when LSU was on tv Saturday night it was really special.

Curious, do you think competing networks shouldn’t try to get as many viewers as possible in each time slot? Do you think they could agree on who should just give up revenue at a particular part of the day?

I don’t think it is and it predates ESPN, no way it was going to get better with more networks broadcasting games.

I do feel your frustration, though.
