I am a Luka fan, but the bottom line is they decided paying 350plus million for a one dimensional player who hasn’t listened to them wasn’t what they want to do. I’m fine with that. I’ve been waiting for Luka to take that next step and he hasn’t. He’s an elite scorer and that’s it and he has shown nothing to becoming more than that. Now, imagine this same person after signing the max deal. You really think he’s gonna turn into a killer and do what it takes to win championships? Of course not.
Maybe this will light a fire under him, but moving to LA in the environment is kid if the exact opposite of moving to Russia to train, ala Rocky. I’ll still root for him but I know what he is and what he isn’t. And all this talk of him being a top 3-5 player is a joke. He’s definitely a top 3 offensive players but the metrics don’t bare out he’s a top 3 overall player.
WTF do you care? its not your money
there are no principles in this, only performance and value
what just happened is a top 5 market team just traded a top 5 asset to the top market team in their conference without even shopping him first
a five time first team All NBA player who hasnt even hit his career prime yet
we have no idea what luka’s peak looks like, but you want to be the beneficiary if his peak is an all time type career. the mavs had that asset for another year and a half and traded it to the lakers for $.40 on the dollar
there is no excuse or justification for it, none

It's the worst, most underhanded trade in NBA history. That is a fact.
And it has nothing to do with conditioning, or defense, or culture.
Those were all lies as part of the coverup

They dealt him as a "win now" move, though.
People keep saying this like the Mavs were years away from winning the finals with Luka and are now closer to winning it because they got AD.

Agree, which is why the owner/casino angle seems very plausible

By then Vegas will have an expansion franchise
We thought that vegas and seattle would both have franchises by now. Hasn’t happened yet and nothing remotely concrete on the horizon.
IF this theory has any merit, the adelsons would likely be extremely active in making sure they are the owners of any vegas based nba team.

Well gambling is still illegal in the Free State of Texas so now they are gutting the team to make it easier to move out if Texas fails to have a change of heart on gambling/casino legalization.
With the obsession with sports gambling and all these athletes getting popped, maybe it’s for the best. If Texas starts allowing casinos on the reg, Louisiana is fricked.

The Seattle media market is nowhere near the size of the DFW media market (DFW is top 10 for sure, likely top 5). Absent some secret deal where the NBA already has a new group lined up for a replacement Dallas franchise, the Mavericks aren't going anywhere.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is Exhibit A in Mr. Mackey's phrase: "drugs are bad, mmmkay?"

Dallas gets an expansion team when/if the Mavs move to Vegas.
I doubt there will be a move, but if it did happen, absolutely Dallas gets an expansion team. They will NOT allow themselves to not have a franchise in a top 4 media market.

I want casinos in Texas.
But why the hell would the rest of Texas care if the Mavericks moved to Vegas? If that is supposed to be a stick, it is a damn twig.

And therein lies the problem. Getting state congressmen to vote for this will be a big hill to climb. And the owners are setting them up to be moved if not approved.

Thank you. This theory is ludicrous. In a state the size of Texas, with legislators who would be threatening their own reelection if they approved casinos, and most of them having absolutely no tie to the DFW area or the mavericks, how could anyone really believe this whole ploy would work? Losing the Mavericks would not move the needle in the state legislature one inch. It’s laughable.

I don't see any world where the nba abandons the DFW TV market
if they wanted a casino team they should have bought the Pels.
New orleans would have let them build a resort and if not it would take a light breeze to get them to LV

like how in the move Eddie the most unrealistic part wasn't Whoopi Goldberg coaching an NBA team, but that the league would ever approve moving the Knicks from New York to St. Louis.
Man, I love an Eddie reference.

Remember, they are going to use any leverage they can. No city or state wants to lose a sports franchise.
Option 1: In 2 years with Luka the fans would be screaming to keep them.
Option 2: In 2 years without him they are not good and fans have moved on and not much support like with Luka, they face an easier path to move them.
All they are doing is positioning the team to move if it comes to that. They don’t care, they want a casino. If they fail to get it passed in 27, they move the team. They will get city and state to argue against moving, but if it fails the NBA will pay them back for moving Luka to LA.
Its just one of many steps they’ll use to try and get casino.

I don’t find it a credible threat. This isn’t a small market.
Now, it would make more sense if you said the trade was part of an under the table agreement with the NBA to facilitate the move (if needed) and to benefit LA for the financial benefit.
That would be crazy. But at least it would make sense.
I don’t think any owner is forcing the NBAs hand to move a team out of Dallas.

I think you missed some context.
The owners moving Luka to LA was their favor to NBA. If the casino doesn’t pass in 27, they will be paid back by approval from NBA to move team to Vegas
And with the team gutted, there will be less pushback by fans. Thats just a part of the bigger picture.
If approved it will take until early 30’s before finished and they can rebuild in those years.

They better negotiate to keep the naming rights if it happens. I doubt those owners give a shite anyway.
As someone who grew up watching the Mavericks suck terribly they had one of the more remarkable turnarounds in American pro sports after Cuban took over.
*Yeah i forgot drafting Dirk was probably a bigger reason for the turnaround.
