Following another hitless game Sunday, Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis is closing in on some dubious baseball history.

Davis went 0 for 4 in his team's blowout loss to Yankees (NYY 15, BAL 3), extending his hitless streak to 44 consecutive at-bats. He is only two at-bats away from tying the longest ever hitless streak by a non-pitcher.

quote:

Davis last recorded a base hit Sept. 14, 2018 when he doubled against then-White Sox righty James Shields. He is 0 for 44 with six walks and 27 strikeouts since his last hit, including 0 for 23 with four walks and 13 strikeouts so far in 2019. Dating back to last season, Davis is an 1-for-62 slump.

quote:

Last season Davis authored a miserable .168/.243/.296 batting line in 522 plate appearances, which amounts to minus-2.8 WAR. There have been over 61,000 individual position player seasons in baseball history, and, by WAR, Davis' 2018 season is one of the 20 worst. He was historically terrible last year.

quote:

The Orioles signed Davis to a seven-year contract worth $161 million in January 2016, and they still owe him approximately $92 million through 2022

He’s so bad. It’s hilarious watching the Orioles just get railroaded by his horrendous deal.

Why dont they at least send him down for a bit?
Is he out of options?

At some point they just have to release him right? A rookie on minimum salary could at leaat get 1 hit

He literally was 3rd in the MVP race 6 years ago and posted and OPS above .800 3/4 years during that stretch.

The dude seriously needs a sports psychologist at this point. Im sure theres no regrets everytime he cashes the check but from an on the field standpoint I think the contract hinders him mentally.

He’s either fricked in the head or has stopped caring. There’s bad. And then there’s little Blind Timmy from down the street with the gimp leg would have a greater chance at getting a hit than Davis.

He needs to fake a debilitating injury to avoid embarrassment.

Very rarely, especially in the case of hitters, is it a good idea to give a player 30 years or older a long term contract. I could particularly see Mike Trout being an exception, but sure as hell not Chris Davis.

Edit: Id be more than happy to be a historically bad baseball player for that amount of money.

Yeah I get that sentiment but something seemingly set in stone & is written off for dead can still change, especially in sports

He should “injure” his hamstring or something & they should find a “tear”. Take some time off then do a full 20 day rehab in AAA to try to find his swing/confidence
