quote:

Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh continued his praise for Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy at the league meetings Thursday, calling McCarthy's Pro Day he'd ever seen and doubling down on his belief that he is the best quarterback in the NFL draft.

"I think he plays quarterback the best of any quarterback in the draft," said Harbaugh, seemingly emphasizing McCarthy's command of an offense. "... He's incredible. So big market, small market. Cold weather, hot weather, it won't matter."

Harbaugh is a great coach, but goddamn he could be an even better car salesman

Poised presence in the pocket.

Can make all the throws.

Extends plays with his running ability.

Yes, I can see why he’s the best QB in this year’s draft.

I have this weird feeling that he's going to be like Herbert, where he has all the physical tools and was just in a shitty college offense. Everything screams "he's overrated and just tools" but he comes in and succeeds.

He is a solid QB and is a winner. Best is a massive stretch.

Well think about it.

You are always going to push your former players as a College Coach. And as a Pro Coach you are always going to lie or put out subterfuge about your draft thoughts

This is a 100 percent expected statement.

Except Jim had turned out QBs that looks great in college too.

Big difference between playing QB for Harbaugh and for Mario Cristobal.

But he doesn't have the tools of Herbert. Harbaugh is just helping his guy out, it's to be expected. McCarthy, like any other QB, needs to fall into a good situation. I think Minnesota, where he can sit for a year behind Darnold, would be good for him.

If you don't believe Caleb Williams is that good (which seems to be a popular opinion on this board) then I don't think its THAT unreasonable of a take. If this board wasn't rampant with LSU homers it wouldn't be seen that way here either.

Do I agree with it? Nah.

Do I think its possible he ends up as the best pro QB of the top 4? Sure.

I would actually have a really tough time putting him ahead of Drake Maye if I tried to logic myself into his opinion though. Seems like Maye has actually done the things McCarthy is supposedly capable of but rarely got a chance to put on film.

ETA: I think Jayden will be the best QB out of this class but I really believe that JJ will be the 2nd best and will have a 15 year career. People throwing him out with the bathwater are going to end up looking foolish.

Herbert was actually good/great in college too. McCarthy was serviceable.

Yes playing for Willie Taggart and Mario Cristobal is the same as Harbaugh. What a shite take

Whoever ends up with the Vikings will be set up for immediate success. Whoever ends up with the Patriots might have a rough rookie year because of limited weapons around him. So much of it is based on what the organization does to help a rookie QB as opposed to ability

I saw some pretty good technical analysis recently about how he is solid on throws up the middle, but his setup is flawed and hurts his throws to the sideline.

I felt like he just did not demonstrate a lot of touch. I also don't remember many deep balls other than when OSU left guys 10 yards open in 2022.

I feel Maye is more likely to be that then McCarthy. Maye has actually shown the tools but was just stuck on an underachieving team. McCarthy really didnt show all that much at Michigan. I dont really remember being confused about Herbert being talked about like I am McCarthy.

Maybe he should trade Herbert to the team who drafts JJ.
