I was watching a video of Walter Payton running the ball on Facebook and got to wondering, I think Chris Johnson was the last to do it if I'm not mistaken? Will we ever see it again with the modern style of football??

Probably not. Work loads are different now.

That's what I thought too, we see alot of spreading the rock around now, and almost every team has 2 or 3 backs they rely on.

Football is cyclical. Defenses will adjust to the wide open offenses we are seeing now by having smaller, faster players all on defense. Then teams will adjust by running the ball again with workhorse power backs to dominate the TOP

Cowboys have been doing this for like three years.

Did Jamal Lewis do it too? I can’t remember. It’s been a long time.

There has been two in the last 10 years

ADrian peterson and Chris Johnson

The 10 years before hand there was 1, before that 2 then 1 again

So seems par for the course that there will only be 1 in the next 10 years

MSB uses the words "ever" and "never" entirely too much. How about changing title to read "in the foreseeable future".

it's still unlikely you see a 2k rusher b/c even in that system you'll split carries around

it's just tough without a rule change b/c passing is more efficient than rushing

I think so.

It's never really been common so the current drought is not extraordinary. It's always taken a really special season.

I just looked it up - even rarer than I thought. There have only been 7 players to do it in the history of the NFL and each only did it 1 time:

OJ Simpson (1973)
Eric Dickerson (1984)
Barry Sanders (1997)
Terrell Davis (1998)
Jamal Lewis (2003)
Chris Johnson (2009)
Adrian Peterson (2012)

Chris Johnson is the only player to get 2,500 yards from scrimmage in a season. With more RBs getting receiving yards these days, I wonder how long it will be until another RB gets 2,500.

It's a very difficult milestone to achieve but there are a few guys playing now that could conceivably get it.

I still think it’s extreme to say we’ll never see one again. Right now the leading rushers are hovering around 310-320 carries in a season. When Peterson broke it he had 348 carries and averaged 6.0 YPC. I don’t think it’s crazy that at least one guy will average 2-3 more carries per game. Also it was just 4 years ago Murray had almost 400 carries.

Did it in 2 fewer games than anyone else on that list too. If you look at his team’s stats that season, you’ll see he had significantly more rushing yards than his team had total passing yards. Pretty insane season.

Yes. Running the ball remains a staple of the game. When you run the ball you control the game clock and better control the ebb and flow of the game.

Plus every once in awhile there comes a running back like Sanders or Peterson who is so dominant you just run and run them till they get 2,000 yards and 20 TDs.

If you study football you'll find all those pass-happy coaches turned to that because they couldn't run the ball. Running the ball will always remain the primary objective in football offenses because when you pass three things can happen and only one is good.

Ever? Yea..of course. Football will change every 10 years or so into a new games and eventually will come back to heavily relying on a one back run game. Just needs to be a freak of nature like Peterson was.

It's plausible.

You realistically need at least 335 attempts to do it, and despite no one getting 335 attempts since 2012, Elliot would have had he started 16 games in 2016, and Bell wasn't too far off in 2017.

It's going to take a guy averaging 6 YPA on 335 caries, and no one with 200 caries or more averaged more than 5.01 YPA last year.

Like I said, it's plausible.
