The NBA All-Star Game will switch formats this season, as two captains will select the teams regardless of which conferences the players play in, the league announced Tuesday.

The players who win the fan vote from each conference will be the captains.

There will still be 12 players selected from each conference for the game in Los Angeles on Feb. 18. Five players from each conference will be selected as starters with fan vote being worth 50 percent, player vote worth 25 percent and media vote 25 percent. Seven reserves for each team will be picked by each conference's head coaches.

The new system will enable players from each conference to play against each other and allows current teammates to face off. Depending on the makeup of the teams, it is possible players voted in as starters may not actually start the game.

Last season, LeBron James led fan voting in the East and Stephen Curry had the honor in the West. All-Star voting will begin on Christmas Day.

They had to do this considering how stacked the west is compared to the east after this past offseason.

You’ve got guys in the west who won’t make the team but would be starter caliber in the east.

I like it, but I feel like they should just do league all star vote and scrap conference affiliation.

Also want to see them seed 16 playoff teams and do away with East vs West for the playoffs.

I'm confused by the this. For example, Lebron would be able to select players in the West?

Yes, LeBron could put together a Banana Boat crew of himself, CP3, Melo, etc, if he gets the picks he wants.

Yes if he leads in votes.

I think it will create some good story lines to see who snubbed who.

Well this doesn't guarantee that will change.
They'll just pick their buddies, and it may end up unbalanced still

Yes. I take it as the 10 "starters" are selected by 50% fan vote, 25% media vote, 25% player vote and the 14 "reserves" are selected by the coaches. And there's a captain from the east and west. But Lebron could pick whoever from those 22 players for his team and Curry could draft whoever from those 22 players for his team. Maybe I misunderstood though

Fan vote is just stupid honestly. They should do a fan vote after the players are selected to pick captains. The captains should shoot half court shots to see who picks first.

Definitely need to get rid of conference affliation as the East is so weak.

Need to find something to incentivize winning the game also.

Well I don't understand why an East player would select for the West team. Would make more sense for Curry to pick his West team and Bron pick his East team.

The fans need to make Russ the top vote getter to see the squad he picks. Durant May get picked last

Not sure why this got down-voted.

There are probably 2 players in the top 10 who play in the East, it's stupid to split it 12-12 East and West.

Yes and No. On one hand, you won't see the "West" winning by 40 points.

On the other hand, there are going to be 12 players from the East and 12 from the West. They are just going to be mixed up between Team LeBron and Team KD (or Harden, Westbrook, Curry, whatever). It's just that there will be Western conference players on Team LeBron.

THere will still be 4-6 undeserved all stars from the East and lots of Western snubs. And it will be embarrassing when the last 6 picks or all from the East

I do think this should increase the competitiveness of the game though as the guys will want to win for their captains.

Would be funny if other captain doesn't pick Kyrie either and Lebron gets stuck with him as the last pick.
