For a fair comparison using college football, this would basically be the equivalent if an FCS school managed to tie a game with a top 5 team.

App State tying #5 Michigan wouldn't have had the same effect.

In football, the superior team can physically dominate its way to a victory. In soccer, a vastly inferior team can muck up the game. A DIII soccer team could beat a DI team on a given day. A DIII football team couldn’t keep it within 70 vs an FBS team.

First scoreless draw in this World Cup and it is the coolest moment in the tournament so far.

The fact that a 0-0 ties qualifies as "the coolest moment in the tournament so far" is kind of indicative of why soccer isn't as beloved in the US as other places. Even if the result was unexpected. You're going to have a tough time convincing most American sports fans that 90+ minutes of no scoring and no winner/loser is a great event.

They should play sudden death. Maybe do 5 on 5 or something. Ties are dumb, but it’s cool to see Cape Verde tie Spain. Wyoming probably has a higher population than Cape Verde.

Draw but this is the college football equivalent of Georgia State beating Alabama or Georgia on the road

when i was finishing up school, i shared an office with a 30 YO foreign exchange student worker dude from Trinidad and Tobago in 2006 that was just ecstatic that they had made the cup. We got along and I humored him, but he made me watch all of world cup that year since T&T made it. This was West Texas so I had never cared about or watched world cup a day in my life.

Then they tied Sweden 0-0 in the first match and he ran around the office (reminder that we were student workers) yelling "WE ARE THE GREATEST!!! F THE SWEDES!!! F ALL OF EUROPE!!! THIS IS THE GREATEST DAY OF MY LIFE."

and then he literally went home and had a 3 day bender of watching parades back in Trinidad and came back in the office like nothing ever happened without calling in.

I loved that dude.

This is probably equivalent to Lehigh beating Duke in the NCAA tournament.

Except no one "beat" anyone here and Spain is not eliminated from the tournament

Because there's little effect unless you have a winner. Especially for Americans.

Good thing Apply State won and made the game an all-time classic "real" upset.

A tie here is a win for one and a loss for the other. You advance out of group play by earning points. 1 for a draw, 3 for a win. Cape Verde just got a point against one of the 2-3 favorites to win it all.

Puts way more pressure on Spain than CV.

I guess that's why the ticket prices for their match against Saudi Arabia just jumped up.

That's exactly the point.

It's why the OP is labeled "Cape Verde beats Spain 0-0". This is a monumental win for Cape Verde...and a monumental loss for Spain...even within the reality that it was a draw.

This post is the equivalent of me explaining a punchline to you.
