Like line up in shotgun and have your QB just rip a quick punt on 4th down. Might be a dumb question but couldn't find an easy answer without digging in the rule books

But you can be sly about it right? You don't have to give the defense notice or anything. It's a different take on a fake punt I guess.

The punt formation is only the way it is for strategic reasons

As long as you don't cross LOS and don't have linemen downfield you can kick the ball.

Newton used to quick kick at auburn.

No a pooch is referred to how a ball is kicked. It's usually short and high in the air when yoy have a short field. Yes, I suppose a QB could do it but that's not what I'm talking about.

Sure can

Wanna say that Spurrier used to do this on 3rd down while at Florida when he would get frustrated with his QBs.

ETA: From one of the comments on the video.

By the way, Cunningham was a two-time All-American punter(with a career average of 45.6 yards per kick - still a UNLV record) and is also the UNLV all-time passing leader with over 8,000 yars and 59 TD's in 3 seasons. Oh, and how 'bout Sammy Baugh? He? was an All-Pro QB, punter, and defensive back at the same time for multiple seasons. He's still the #2 punter of all time behind only Ray Guy, and he is widely considered one of the greatest players in the history of football.

If you were to ask me the last time I saw a QB punt out of a non punt formation, I could not give you an example

Tyler Bray did it in the Tennessee-Florida game earlier this year.

You can be real sly about it. On 3rd and extremely long, teams have done a surprise quick kick with the qb. Catch them completely off guard and save field position because no return. It's not unheard of.

That's a great link but it appears Cunningham was in a punt formarion and the defense was ready for it.

I'm talking about lining up in shotgun and the defense thinks your going for it and lines up in a 5-2 formation and the ball just goes way over anybody who is ready for it.

You are thinking about the NFL....in college everyone can go downfield at the snap.

This is typically exactly how it's done.

Ok. I guess either I dont watch enough football (which is scary cause I watch a lot) or I'm just unlucky and never catch it. Or I'm just wasted half the time and don't remember shite.
