What an awful thread. Since 2002, Kansas in the tournament:

1 Title
3 Title game appearances
4 Final Four's
7 Elite Eight's
9 Sweet 16's

They have made it to the Final Four one third of the time in this span and are in the Elite Eight more than half of the time. In what world is that underachieving?

I think a few days ago people were arguing they were the best program since 2000; but they suck today for sure

With expectations of that program, I promise you jayhawk nation isn't happy today.

under/overachieving is all relative to the expectations and level of performance demanded.

You guys are comparing Kansas' accomplishments against the expectations for your teams, not against KU fan's expectations.

Well they're fricking stupid if they think their team is perennial underachievers.

What fanbase is happy the day after their team blows a huge lead and gets bounced from the tournament? Just because they are unhappy today after a really tough loss does not have any bearing on whether their program is underachieving (which they are by any metric, absolutely not doing).

Of course #1 seed going down in the Sweet 16 sucks, but it could be worse, they could be Gonzaga who I believe has only been to the Elite 8 once and never been to the Final 4.

It's a single elimination tournament where you have to win 6 games in a row. It's pretty much the worst way ever to determine a national champion

The top two seeds in each region start the tournament against roughly a 60th ranked team then a 30th ranked team. So those first two rounds aren't exactly running the gauntlet. After that, you have 16 teams fighting for the championship.

It's set up to get the top seeds into the final games. What's more fair than that?

Kansas basketball is the college basketball equivalent to Michigan football. They might have more history than every other program in college basketball but their accomplishments in the modern era of college basketball lag behind the other bluebloods. Kansas only has two national championships in the last 60 years. UNC and Kentucky both have five national championships over that time period, UCLA has eleven, Duke has four and Indiana has three. They also never seem to be THE dominant #1 program in college basketball. Compare that to UNC, Kentucky, Duke and UCLA who have all had numerous stretches as the premier program in CBB.

Jayhawk nation is not happy because they lost in embarrassing fashion, but they played for the national title last year and won their 9th straight conference title this year.

Total shite thread.

the only reason you think they are underachievers is because they are the best overachievers ever. look up the past 10 years of kansas basketball (hell, do the last 25 if you want) . it's phenomenal. they cant do it every year. no one can. and they are the best basketball program of the last 10 years. that is pretty much a fact.

last night sucked and yeah everyone is disappointed, but it's mainly just with how we lost. woulda rather got dominated or lost a close one (you know what i mean).

Sort of.

When they have won, it's been sort of a surprise.

But they went through long stretches under Roy Williams of being the #1 program during the regular season...so many times they were perennially ranked #1 in the polls - but alas, they would then flop in the tourney.

When they've been regular season dominant - they haven't fared well. When they've won the NCAA tournament, they were really good but sort of crept up on the pundits.

I don't think it's fair to call them underachievers. Most schools would love to have their basketball program. Anytime you deal with a single-elimination tournament it happens. Self is a
poor game coach though. That last play call was an abomination.

People routinely assert how unfair the NCAA tournament is, but looking at the results, it does a really good job of crowning a team that had a legitimate claim

I don't think the "unfair" argument has much merit. There are a set of rules in place that are not more unfair to any particular team in general.

As to the "legitimate claim" comment? If a team wins the tournament they obviously have a legitimate claim (they won the tournament and therefore the national championship according to the agreed upon rules). Does that mean they were the most deserving team for the season as a whole? No, that's a weakness of the system but a weakness that everyone agreed would not be held against them.

As for the OP? No. Kansas is one of the great basketball programs in the country.
