Can someone explain to me why the red river shootout had to change its name?

Who complained about that name of a football game?

People who don't watch football were offended by the name of the football game.

I assume because enough losers complained about it "promoting gun violence." Like the Washington Bullets becoming the Wizards.

They didn't HAVE to.
They wanted to for some stupid reason.

World's Greatest Outdoor Party was even dumber. Can't say cocktail because if you do, 18-20 year olds might drink alcohol.

They found out the river is not really red.

It will always be the Red River Shootout, World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, and Civil War to me.

Yep.
Same for those who demanded teams like the Cleveland Indians and Washington Redskins change their names. The overwhelming majority of native Americans couldn't have care less about the names. They had more important day-to-day things to worry about. Same for fans of those teams, and football/baseball fans in general. It was predominantly white leftist who demanded the name changes white-knighting for "offended" people who weren't really offended.
Texas/Oklahoma fans weren't demanding the name change. Same for Florida/Georgia fans when the mandate came down to stop referring to their game as the "world's largest outdoor cocktail party."
But in the end, thank goodness we have white leftist here looking out for us and fighting offenses we didn't even know we had.

People who don’t even watch football are the ones who complained, that’s who.

There was a shooting where fans from both teams would gather the night before on Main St. downtown. I believe 1 or 2 people were killed but I'm fuzzy on that and can't find any info on the shooting. Shortly after the shooting, maybe the next year, the name was changed.

UK and UTk had to give up the bourbon barrel trophy because somebody died from driving drunk after a game several years back.

In 2005 became Red River Rivalry. In 2014 Red River Showdown. In 2023 back to Red River Rivalry as Allstate took over sponsorship from AT&T.

That's why the WLOCP name was officially dropped in 06 after a drunk fan who was underage fell out of a parking deck and died.

If you're asking why something fun and harmless got ruined the answer is liberals, always.

Same people who are trying to get Vegas to stop using the word "shooter" at the dice tables

Because politicians and the “elite” can’t actually do anything meaningful to curb gun violence. So they do stuff like this so they can pat themselves on the back and act like they’re doing something or to make it look like they care about the issue.
It was the same with Covid. The politicians, doctors, and other people making decisions knew there was really nothing they could do. They didn’t have any real answers. So they came up with “social distancing” and masks to pretend like they were really doing something. They knew it wouldn’t really have an effect, but they couldn’t just shrug their shoulders and say there’s nothing we can do.
A lot of what politicians and those in charge of organizations do is completely for show. Because actually solving problems is hard work and takes a real effort. It’s much easier to just do these superficial things and garner positive media attention than actually do something meaningful.
