Nope. Better market, school, deeper pockets, etc
SMU is in a bigger market and has more money but they are not a better school than Tulane.
Also does performance/ potential not matter anymore? Tulane in one season accomplished more than SMU has in decades

Slow down just a little. History tells me a couple of things here. Yeah, that Cotton Bowl win over USC was cute and all, but you need to remember your rightful place.
In the last 27 years as a member of a conference, Tulane has won exactly 2 conference titles. Before this past year, the last championship came in 1998 during a 12-0 season. I am pretty sure everyone was talking about "potential" back then, also. And that "potential" turned into 3-8 the next season and a run of 19 years that produced exactly 3 winning seasons.
History tells me that when Tulane has a great season, it is an accident. Willie Fritz is a good coach, but if you think you are going to start rattling off conference titles and New Year's 6 bowl appearances, then you are delusional.
Minus last year, you are basically equal to SMU at this point. Until Tulane starts doing something consistent and can prove that last year was not a one-off, don't look down your nose at SMU.

Minus last year, Tulane has been an absolute joke and a dead program until they moved on campus

Man, since I started posting here I've probably been the most vocal person on TD saying SMU is better than everyone thinks but in the last 40 years SMU has won... checks notes... ZERO conference titles and the last time they finished ranked was 1984 which was right at the end of their Pony Expre$$ days. The last time a P5 came calling to steal their HC, SMU lost theirs to their cross town rival TCU while Tulane was able to hold off Georgia Tech. In the last 25 years Tulane is 5-2 in bowls while SMU is 3-4 (w/2 COVID cancellations)
SMU has been a bit more consistent but the fact of the matter is Tulane has two top 10 finishes in the last 25 years which is 100% more than SMU has done in decades. It's not even debatable.

History tells me that Chris Scelfo, Bob Toledo, and Curtis Johnson were incompetent Head Football Coaches and at that point in their careers - they refused to put in the required creativity and work to win at Tulane.
If you have someone competent, you can win at Tulane and be a Top 25 program.

does Tulane have boosters willing to float the program for 7 years?

recent conference titles aren't pre-rec for joining a better conference, see Texas and Texas a&m

Tulane would have to float it for 15 to make up the difference in markets
Yes. It’s that big between NOLA and Dallas.

SMU is in too many shadows of other popular Texas programs to be relevant in a Big Conference.
They metro area couldn't even support them in past seasons when they were playing on Thursday or Friday nights in the most passionate state for consuming football.
Texas, A&M, TCU, Texas Tech, Baylor, Houston... all more relevant. I would say UTSA actually has more upside in the next twenty years than SMU.

SMU and Tulane have played 16 times since 2005. Tulane has won 5 of them.

Texas has 2 conference championships in last 25 years.
Aggie hasn't won anything in forever.
That's inexcusable for a program with the resources of Texas.

The entire state of Texas has a culture issue when it comes to football

Including last year 59-24 and it was only that close because Tulane was playing walk ons midway through the 3rd quarter

Its one game.

SMU leads all time series as well. This really isn't a comparison.

Look bud. Both programs want to be relevant again. But the reality is Dallas metro is one of the fasting growing in the country. NOLA is a dumpster fire. It’s not going to work out for you.

Let’s drop the Tulane talk and get back on course.
“Spoke to an administrator at Clemson about Stanford, Cal and SMU. " We are going through a process on the adding of these 3 fine potential members. Look we are not going to block any deal that brings more money to the conference and adds teams that brings value. We think that could be the case w/ Stanford, Cal and SMU however we are not there yet. We will continue to work to do what is the best interest of Clemson and the ACC.”
