Why would they release him without at least trying to shop him around to get something in return?

They did try to shop him around and there was no interest in his contract

Saints were offering picks for OBJ at the deadline if the Browns swallowed some of his cap hit but they didn’t want to do it.

Now they end up swallowing some of his cap hit anyway and don’t get any draft picks for it.

I think the Browns we’re hoping they could leverage him to agree to a lower buyout number, but it seems as tho he cared more about keeping his contract in place than getting to pick his spot after clearing waivers since they agreed to a reduction of his base salary

That would have been a lot of money to walk away from. This is his job at the end of the day. If I were his agent, I wouldn't have advised him any different under the circumstances. He very possibly may never see that kind of money again.

But also established to Payton they won't give in. Next draft trade, he'll give them next year's one and a 2 for this year's 2.

Josh Gordon ring a bell?
OBJ is probably way shittier to be around than Josh Gordon.

That’s the issue.

Teams can’t wait to get rid of this guy.

For his talent, his contract is actually pretty below market.

Going to the right place and hitting FA is probably the better move. Especially since he doesn’t have any guaranteed money left in his deal, his next team can cut him whenever they want if they claim that contract so it’s not really promising him anything

Yeah Gordon is a frickup but he's a frickup in the "I'm not reliable" way (and for like 5 years nobody really expects him to be reliable).

OBJ is a frickup in the "everyone except my dad hates me" kind of way, which is less palatable.

Good point… the worst thing that happened to Odell was that catch against the Cowboys in prime time. He is injury prone and has an attitude problem…. He is the Kyrie Irving of the NFL…. But yet someone will pick him up a cancer in the locker romm. I don’t want him near the Saints…….

Raiders are the Vegas favorites to land OBJ at +350

Saints are next up at +450

BILLS +500
RAVENS +550
PATS +50
COLTS +900
RAMS +900
PACKERS +1200
49ERS + 1400

Vegas only bets on where the money is.

The sudden hole in the Raiders’ lineup where Ruggs got released makes OBJ an easy bet for a pickup whether it happens or not.

The Raiders just created a little over a million in cap space restructuring Richard's contract so they are def in on him or Jackson.

Since Odell restructured his deal, the raiders don’t really have a shot unless the entire league balks at claiming him, which feels unlikely given how inexpensive of a pick up he would be and you can simply cut his no strings attached after the season (or sooner if it’s ugly)

Not sure, from what I gather we want DJax so it is likely for him not OBJ.

I'd like to have Odell on the Saints but he should go to the place with the best QB and the worst WR corps.

That might be the Bills, Raiders, Packers etc over the Saints.

Maybe, but the Saints per PFF have the worst WR group out of those teams mentioned. Saints only have 1 WR in the top 100 WR's. Raiders have 3, now 2. Packers have 2 including #1 Adams. Bills have 2.

Packers at least have Davonte.

Saints have one of the worst WR corps in the league imo.
Especially with the Thomas news from yesterday.
Now their QB position is another story.
