There is another study out about how prevalent CTE is amongst former NFL players.
Time article about it

Every time we get one of these people freak out like something needs to be done. What needs to be done? Are there people out there telling these guys football isn’t dangerous? Are there coaches and doctors lying to them and telling them they can’t hurt their brains by playing football?

It’s a dangerous sport and these guys actively choose to play it for millions of dollars. Sure it sucks that this happens but I never understand the outcry.

They can put all the regulations in place they want but at the end of the day, guys are going to hurt their brains if they play full speed tackle football, it is what it is and IMO they willingly accept the risk

You’re right. We’ll see if it gets regulated out of existence. Hopefully it won’t. We probably do need to do as much as possible to protect kids before they get to college, but I don’t know how you do that.

Agree with OP. Maybe 20 years ago this would be a legit story, but we are pretty deep into these studies by now. Everyone playing football in 2026 should know the risks they sign up for.

I don’t know, we’ve done so much over the last decade to “protect kids”. Most of it has just made society worse and made kids more afraid, depressed, and anxious.

Maybe the scale? 1 in 4 is high. That study is about players who died in 2016-2021. Presumably that included older players who played decades ago but we have much more info now going forward

I am more interested in the issue related to non NFL players. Remember reading about Divison 2 players having issues. Sure, people who played 10 years in the NFL and made millions (at least millions today, not in the 70s) are having issues but what about lower level players too

1 in 4? They tested 235 brains and 215 had cte. The other 650 players that died didnt agree to testing
quote:

In the new study, Daneshvar and his colleagues examined the brains of 235 former NFL players who had donated their brains to science. (A total of 878 players died in that 2016-2021 window.) Of the brains studied,  215 were found to have CTE—or 91%. The researchers arrived at their much lower one-in-four figure by making the exceedingly cautious assumption that none of the remaining 643 brains would have shown signs of the disease

The idea you can legislate violence out of a game that is inherently violent is right up there with the transitioning fad.

Are they claiming anyone with tau protein clusters has CTE?

Did they control for the age of the subjects?

I’ll just go read the report

Presumably the ones who agreed to testing may have already had reason to suspect CTE. OTOH it may be scientifically prudent to assume none of the others had it, but it's ludicrous to think that's the case. It wouldn't surprise me if the real number is half or more.

Anecdotally, the one former NFL player I know is married to a girl I grew up with. He's kind of a belligerent jackass with a bad temper but maybe that's just his personality.

They do so now at their own risk for multigenerational wealth

This is no longer news or shocking information

Play or don’t. I don’t really care .

So, don’t do anything to try and make it better? Should we get rid of seatbelts in cars? What about speed limits?

Same. I'm curious what the rates would be, in college or especially high school, we're talking kids with fewer total reps AND the reps themselves are against lesser athletes, leading to (in theory) lower wear & tear. It would be the same in the NFL - the older guys dying now weren't playing quite the same caliber of athletes & optimization that came with big money.

I'm also curious on how the rates compare to other sports. IIRC soccer, often touted as a "safer" alternative, has an even HIGHER rate of CTE than football

Exactly. It's not a random sample of players.

Now, a couple of different research teams need to repeat the study a couple more times.
