Assuming you could find odds making Alabama a favorite over Indiana - would that mean Alabama had an argument for being the best team in the country?

My answer is no for both Alabama and Notre Dame (among many other teams)

Indiana would be favored by a field goal

Serious question

Are you proposing ranking teams based on Vegas spreads instead of their records?

To me that seems like a less than serious idea. Not just because gambling carries risk of corruption. Also because the purpose of Vegas setting up a betting line isn't to predict the outcome. The purpose of the betting line is to game bettors perceptions and make money no matter what the outcome.

No matter what the talent is on the field the Yankees will always generate disproportionately more bettors than the Royals.

No.

You said nobody that didn’t make the CFP had could win it anyway so no big deal. But you can’t say a team that would be favored to beat the #1 team has no chance to win the title.

Notre dame isn’t winning shite neither is Miami may as well throw a good Tulane team and jmu team in. Only 4-5 schools have a chance

Then people be here whining about #13. There will always be a next team.

The 11th, 12th, and even 13th teams have a better argument than the 20th and 24th teams.

That's not exactly right. In fact that's critically different from my opinion.

Could win isn't what I said. I said we have to include everyone with an argument (based on the regular season) for being the best team in the country.

To me the baby is the regular season not the playoff. To preserve the importance of the regular season and the importance of winning every game you have to judge the results of the regular season as the best evidence possible of whether you might be the best team in the country.

When you expand playoffs by default you devalue how punishing losses are and how much we should care about the regular season.

We can already see people saying things like we should get rid of conference championship games because they might harm the losing team. That's a terrible terrible devaluing for what should be every team's first major accomplishment.

Anyway. TLDR

You include too many teams and bullshite results happen. You have the equivalent of wild card teams winning the NC and college football becomes a sport like the NFL but inferior in every way

we are kind of past that point and with 138 teams or whatever it is you can’t only have 12 teams in the playoff when the bowls have been devalued to such a degree.

In the day it was fine because you had the title game, elite bowls, then some really good bowls, etc.

Agreed. IMO a playoff with the top five ranked conference champs and the top three ranked at large teams is more than enough

The bowls will have to succeed or fail on their own merits On what objective basis does a team that hasn't won their conference and has lost multiple games have a reason to complain?

Real issue is that ACC didn't let it's best team play for the championship. This is 100% on ACC.

Tell the ACC not to have such a fricked up tiebreaker.
Well the SEC had a similarly fricked up tiebreaker. Because there were a handful of teams tied with the same conference record, but they didn’t all play each other to settle the tie via head to head. So you end up with 4th and 5th tiebreaker scenarios coming into play. And that will continue to happen more and more with 16-18 team conferences where ties among 3+ teams will happen more and with less likelihood that the tied teams all played each other.

Yeah, let’s at least play the games first before throwing teams out.

Much like bama last year we didn’t get it done so we subjected ourselves to exclusion as did the Irish this year. Handle your shite and your good.
