I ran into Bob Ryan just across the street from Christchurch cathedral, back when the Ryder Cup was being played in Ireland.
It was maybe 2 in the afternoon, and he was too drunk to recognize the giant building behind him as his hotel-- he was actually asking passers-by (including me) where it was. I pointed at the building and he stumbled toward it.
CSB, etc--- but I realized then that if you can't keep it together at 2 in the afternoon on a weekday, well enough to recognize a multi-story hotel with 8 feet high letters on it, that you probably aren't long for the broadcast world. He still gutted it out another 5 years, so, HT to Bob Ryan, who must redefine functional drunk when he gets in the studio.
