The women’s lacrosse team at Delaware State University, a historically Black university, was heading home last month after it played three games in Florida when Georgia authorities interrupted their journey — with a drug-sniffing dog.

Liberty County sheriff’s deputies pulled the bus over, citing a traffic violation, and then entered the vehicle to inform the team that their luggage would be searched for narcotics. One deputy, speaking to the students before the search, emphasized that marijuana is illegal in Georgia for recreational use.

This will not go well, but my suspicion is that you knew that.

Does Georgia need suspicion to search? If so what is the suspicion?

Maybe, just maybe, the bus smelled like weed?

Convenient how that was left out of the story.

No drugs were found? How could the bus smell like weed?

It’s a fricking tinted out bus, I’m sure the troopers KNEW it was full of an all-black lacrosse team before they pulled it over.

She titled her YouTube video “Racism in the South”

There is really absolutely no reason for any routine traffic stop to result in a vehicle being searched.

Issue the ticket and move on.

Predictably it'll be framed as racist Southern cops instead of what it really is, overzealous narcotics officers harassing out of state traffic on the interstate. It's not rare and it's not unique to black people.

They ate the rolling papers pipes and grinder too?

I'm just not seeing it. Feels like the police would've come out and said they smell weed so they have probable cause. I'll wait for their statement before passing judgement.

A traffic violation doesn't give probable cause to search the personal items of everyone onboard the bus. Ticket the driver and keep it moving. Obviously, the ticket was a pretense to conduct an unlawful search.

We're ok with illegal searches now?

Exactly. A bus driver commits a traffic violation and every passenger gets their personal belongings stored in the luggage compartment searched. Seems legit.

I'm not. I'll go to jail before someone is getting in my car illegally.

I saw this on the news this morning. Deputies heard saying that since it's a bus full of young women there might be drugs on board even then though they were told this is a lacrosse team. And the deputies were looking for marijuana of all things.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the Smith College women's lacrosse team would not have had their belongings searched.
