Agree this is up there with Diana. Honestly it’s probably quite a bit bigger.

While horrifically tragic, Kobe's death isn't even remotely close to Diana's on a global scale.

Marshal plane crash

That's what I was thinking. Although I'm biased because my wife's 2nd cousin was a coach for Marshall and died in the crash. Frank Loria

This is the largest sport death of all time.

You have to be kidding. I doubt Kobe Bryant’s crash site will be set aside and visited 100 years after his death, like Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne’s.

Earnhardt is the biggest name to die during their career.

Kobe is likely the biggest global sports star to die suddenly and unexpectedly.

Payne Stewart maybe?

I was pretty young at the time. How big was Payne in the sport of golf?

Yeah, Diana's death is still affecting the royal family to this day.

Regardless of whether you personally care about the royals or not, it's tough to argue that isn't more short and long term "consequential"

Clemente was far larger. Earnhardt as well.

I saw grown hard corps oil drilling rig hands cry when Dale Earnhardt Sr died. It seems like this Kobe death is hitting this country pretty hard ESPN is not showing the Australian Open to cover his death right now. Rachel Michelle Nichols is in tears on ESPN.

I remember Roberto Clemente’s death was very sad and tragic. He was at the height of his popularity at the time, having just recorded his 3000th hit (his last as it turned out) and just one year from his 1971 World Series MVP performance. He died during a humanitarian effort delivering aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua when his plane went down off Puerto Rico. Some of his family and teammates searched for days before they gave up. Sad loss.

I personally can’t comprehend the world’s obsession with the British Royals and never have. I remember when the media made such a big deal over Princess Diana’s death and thinking how ridiculous it was. My wife tried to justify it because she was this wonderful person that took up all these charitable causes all over the world. I laughed and said the media wouldn’t be making a big deal about it if it was Mother Teresa that died. Wouldn’t you know it, Mother Teresa died a few days after Diana and the media proved me right.

In my life, the only deaths that have been bigger from a surprise and fame standpoint have been Princess Diana and Kurt Cobain, even Cobain is debatable.

From a sports standpoint, the Munich disaster has to be number one because of the number of deaths and quality of the players involved. Imagine if half of the Golden State Warriors died in 2017 or something like that. With air travel being the way it was back then, I’m amazed no US pro teams had a similar fate.

Drazen Petrovic’s death was huge in Europe and shocking although he wasn’t near Kobe in terms of fame. Clemente has to be up there, too.

How close was Clemente to retiring? I thought there was a belief among the Pirates that he was close to finishing up his career.

don’t think any sports death compares to it due to the circumstances and Kobe’s age and health and worldwide fame. The only celebrity death that I can remember being as jaw-dropping and shocking was Princess Diana. Michael Jackson’s death was bigger but nowhere near as surprising because it was obvious he had been in ill health for some time.

Dale Earnhardt was pretty epic and ranks up there with Kobe

Earnhardt was still competing and died in game. Kobe was retired. Frankly, I couldn't care less about either of them.

Not sure, but he had to be considering it. He was going on his 18th year in the MLB and would always complain about aches and pains. But then again, he was at the top of his game when he died so who knows how much longer he could’ve played.

I don’t recall Earnhardt’s death being this big.

Although, Media/social media is a bit different these days, and the daughter aspect of the Kobe tragedy makes it different as well.
