If you watch close, he tagged Moorer with some nice right hands before the KO punch, he set this up, it didn’t just happen out of the blue.

This was something as a kid I didn't notice or appreciate until I rewatched the fight years later. George absolutely popped him a couple of times leading up to the KO.

There is no other sport that took such a massive dive in popularity than boxing. It’s a total joke now.

Quick question. Is there anything sports related you actually like now, or is it all a joke compared to how it used to be? If the latter, why do you frequent a board that talks about current sports predominantly?

Oldest Heavyweight champion ever....46 years, 5 months, 18 days old.

He once said he returned to claim the Title to prove being in your 40s/50s wasn't a death sentence in life and boxing.

He lived 30 more years after last holding the crown.

People forget, Foreman's comeback was a sensation. Guys my Dad's age all flocked to the story.... RIP Big George.

Boxing has always been a cesspool, both then and now … but OMG I have always loved it so, because it’s the most primal of athletic competitions. Two men, half naked, in one ring, beating the crap out of each other to see who’s superior.

But to seriously answer Steeler’s question, MMA is the biggest reason boxing has fallen off in popularity today because it’s the perfect sport for today’s ADD generation. Fights might last 30 seconds of sheer action, but you can cram umpteen off them into a card, while a 12-round boxing match takes 47 minutes, there’s often an ebb and flow to fights so it’s not always sheer action, plus they always fart around between fights and at getting people into the ring for fights.

He was Tyson before Tyson. Man he knocked out Frazier and Norton in the second round in their primes!

Ali's upset, and it was an upset, punctured his aura of invincibility much as Douglass's did to Tyson.

He was never really the same after that, but he did re-invent himself later on and is more remembered by this generation for his later successes and seemingly fun personality.

But the first version was a dour, no-nonsense bully with devastating punching power.

Moorer was way ahead on points in that fight. All he had to do was make Foreman keep coming to him....stay away from getting in close which was George's best strategy. Teddy Atlas spoke about this some years ago. He said before the round, everyone in Moorer's corner told him to keep some distance between him and Foreman...that Foreman could devastate if he got some good punches in .

Moorer did not listen and allowed himself to be exposed to the most devastating part of Foreman's style....and Moorer was a good heavyweight. 30-0 before that fight.

Absolute devastating power. I have no idea how he got up and fought back against Ron Lyle and won. That fight was 5 rounds of rockem sockem robots. No defense whatsoever.

I’m very sorry to hear this. A great boxer and an even greater personality.

Boxing promoters are the biggest reason boxing fell off in popularity. You see MMA every weekend somewhere. You just about can't see a boxing match without paying for premium streaming or PPV.

You made a great point about the ADD spectators. Americans aren't interested in boxing because there are no Mike Tysons blasting somebody out in 90 seconds. I think that's another reason why Americans believe Tyson is a top 5 ATG boxer when he was barely top 5 in his own era.

Winning the Heavy Weight Title at 45 is truly mind boggling.
People are in awe that Tom Brady was still playing football in a league that protects the QB.
Meanwhile George knocked out the heavyweight champion at 45.

I would give absolute peak Mike Tyson, especially with Cus D’Amato in his corner, a shot against any heavyweight who ever lived on a given night.

The problem is that peak was microscopically short in reality.

Check out George hitting the heavy bag at age 74.

BTW, apparently his death was unexpected, but things can happen when you get to your late 70s, buying green bananas might not be a good idea.

Damn, this sucks.

Big George isn't just one of my favorite fighters, he's one of my favorite humans. George 2.0 was what we should all aspire to be.
