Colorado St actually makes a GREAT case to be added

Colorado State is also a USNWR top 100 university. Even though they're not AAU, they're ranked higher than their counterparts in Boulder.

Colorado State - Brings the state of Colorado back to the Big 12. ft. Collins is a good college town that can get behind its team. Think switching to Big 12 brings them more recruits, plus they play a PAC 12 team every season.

Memphis - Get attention in SEC country as the SEC did by adding A&M. Program would improve but that football stadium needs improvement.

Cincy - Makes sense because it is a market. Think this is the easiest choice for them to make.

BYU - Not a fan of BYU. Yeah their program makes noise occasionally but Memphis and Colorado State make more sense. Remember when TCU first came over people thought they were not big enough. But look what adding Big 12 to your sleeve does to you with recruiting.

What about Utah State instead of BYU?

Yea you know the Big 12 wants the Denver market back. Colorado St would give them a presence there again. Remember, expansion is also about expanding your footprint in large markets, Denver/Ft Collins certainly brings that.

TCU hasn't been recruiting significantly better since they moved. If anything, they, as well as Baylor, have benefitted from A&M's vicious mugging of Oklahoma and Texas.

Let's examine the State's top players and their school choices. (247 Texas Top 50)

2010

Texas - 18
Oklahoma - 10
Other - 6
Texas A&M - 5
Oklahoma State - 3
SEC - 3
Baylor - 2
Texas Tech - 2
Missouri - 1
TCU - 0

2011

Texas - 14 (-4)
Oklahoma - 8 (-2)
Other - 7 (+1)
Texas Tech - 6 (+4)
SEC - 4 (+1)
Oklahoma State - 3
Texas A&M - 3 (-2)
TCU - 3 (+3)
Baylor - 1 (-1)
Missouri - 0 (-1)

2012

Texas - 18 (+4)
Texas A&M - 8 (+5)
Other - 5 (-2)
SEC - 5 (+1)
Baylor - 4 (+3)
Texas Tech - 4 (-2)
TCU - 3
Oklahoma - 2 (-6)
Oklahoma State - 1 (-2)

2013

Texas A&M - 13 (+5)
Other - 11 (+6)
Texas - 9 (-9)
Oklahoma - 4 (+2)
Oklahoma State - 4 (+3)
Non-A&M SEC - 4 (-1)

Baylor - 6 (+3)
Non-A&M SEC - 5 (+1)
Oklahoma State - 3 (-1)

Agreed. In truth, it's a weak market but the theory is there and it has potential to grow. I give them a geographic pass on WVU because top to bottom they have been a solid football/basketball program over the last 10 years. Colorado is at least congruent with Kansas and Oklahoma.

I guess in theory New Mexico could be looked at as well and would be a good geographic fit, as would Utah State.

I'm not sure they'd want to extend to 4 time zones, but I'd examine San Diego State and UNLV also.

BYU is good, but the religion issues complicate things somewhat.

Outside of Colorado State and either Cincinnati/ Memphis - although not football powers...who else is a football power left to join the Big 12? Unless, you feel some others will leave a power 5 conference.

ECU or bust. They are already the best program in North Carolina. This would also infuriate the ACC as they have been trying to keep the Pirates down forever.

That would certainly be a very interesting move.

And they have been consistently good for a while now.

I like it.

Because the first two teams they add will cost the current members, add two more then you pie is cut into 14 pieces not 10.

No shite, they just remodeled their stadium and brought it to 50k and they still pack it.

They have the best football following in NC.

Not a football power, but a State school with a lot of money and support is UConn. Higher ranked academically (if that matters) than basically any school listed and has the BBall programs at least. They play in a bigger football stadium than Cincinnati or Colo St.

Cincinnati will have a nicer and bigger stadium when they are finished with their renovation.

I think Cincinnati would be a good pick up for the Big 12. They have a good recruiting base there.

Cincinnati & UConn would be good partners for WVU and would bring 2 very good media markets to the B12. Colorado St would bring partial Denver access, but they are by no means as popular as the Buffs there. They also do not have the resources that both UConn and Cinci have.

I see absolutely no appeal in Memphis. BYU, Boise St., and Colorado St are, to me, the only "western" options, and Boise St. probably has it better in the MWest.

In all seriousness as an alum this would be awesome but never gonna happen.

Houston, Rice, Memphis, North Dakota St., all good options.

Yeah, I think North Dakota State is appealing as well, but they haven't even begun the process to move up to FBS so that's a pipe dream right now.

Cincinnati makes a lot of sense from a tv market standpoint. There's one other factor I'd like to introduce that is extremely important in conference expansion deliberations, but rarely gets mentioned.

University Endowments (in billions)

Current Big 12 Unis
UT-Austin: $20.448
Oklahoma: $1.324
TCU: $1.256
Kansas: $1.228
Baylor: $1.061
Texas Tech: $1.043
West Virginia: $1.01
Oklahoma State: $0.818
Iowa State: $0.612
Kansas State: $0.365

Potential Expansion Institutions
Southern Methodist: $1.425
Brigham Young: $1.053
Cincinnati: $1.045
Houston: $0.662
New Mexico: $0.504
Colorado State: $0.399
Wyoming: $0.338
Utah State: $0.209
Memphis: $0.184
East Carolina: $0.145
Central Florida: $0.136
Louisiana Tech: $0.094

Since SMU and Houston are already in the heart of Big 12 country, they add virtually nothing in terms of new markets. Cincinnati, however, is a growing university with an endowment that matches well with the majority of other universities in the Big 12. It also adds tv markets and is closer to West Virginia than the other schools. BYU may be a trump card.

It's an unfortunate reality, but the universities with less than $500 million in endowment money are not very attractive to university presidents and boards. Colorado State might possibly have a chance if Colorado was still a member of the Big 12.
