Just seems like a terrible move to grab schools way outside your conference's geographic footprint...I guess you make some more money but at what expense?

Adding UH and SMU seems like a great way to tie the old SWC back together again (minus A&M, of course).

Colorado State is also a USNWR top 100 university. Even though they're not AAU, they're ranked higher than their counterparts in Boulder.

No one in academia would ever consider Colorado State to be a superior institution to Colorado. Colorado is a major research university that is arguably one of the top 50 universities in the world, much less the nation.

I know most people think the US News rankings are meaningful, but they aren't. When university presidents and administrators look at peer institutions, they either consult the Shanghai Jiaotong rankings or the Times Higher Education rankings.

But even these rankings have limited utility, given their methodological biases.

I think that's a really good point. This tension between meeting the needs of your core region and expanding to become "world-class" exists in every area of higher education. Unfortunately, university presidents receive few incentives to meet the educational, societal, and economic needs of their regions.

However, university presidents do become famous for moving their institutions up a few spots in rankings and in building an international profile. I agree that the Big 12 should think about their region and their culture while considering Houston and SMU. Unfortunately, the people in charge are more likely to think about how they can distinguish their institutions from Houston and SMU in an arguably misguided effort to achieve personal accolades.

Not really, and Tulane does not even deliver the market you refer to anyway. New Orleans is the 51st largest market, behind Orlando (UCF), Cincinnati, Hartfod (UConn), Denver (Colorado St.), Fresno, Raleigh (ECU), etc

Colorado State might possibly have a chance if Colorado was still a member of the Big 12.

Just the opposite--Colorado, like Florida, A&M, etc. would not want that. CSU has a shot now that they're gone.

Regarding ECU, they do have a ton of fans in North Carolina. The interstate is full of them on Saturday even as far as Winston-Salem (3hrs away inland). App State has an awesome tradition too and just went FBS (1-A). The enrollment is as large as Clemson's.
