ESPN and FOX, who have 13-year agreements with the Big 12 that run through 2025, aren't ready to talk about a new deal when the ones in place still have four years to go.

That was a message Big 12 presidents, chancellors and athletics directors heard on a Zoom video conference Monday with a media consulting group it enlisted months ago, Tech President Lawrence Schovanec said.

Schovanec, Texas President Jay Hartzell and West Virginia President E. Gordon Gee formed a three-man committee in the fall of 2020 to study "whether we should consider acting preemptively with regard to our TV contract," Schovanec said, "or just waiting and going into free agency when that contract is up in 2025."

"The general result is that, at this time, with so much uncertainty in the media marketplace as well as the landscape for collegiate athletics," Schovanec said, "our partners, ESPN and FOX, are not interested in acting preemptively with regard to our contract.

That guy really gets around. Must be a hell of a politician and fairly wealthy at this point. Don't think I've thought of him since he was at Ohio St.

He was the president at CU when I was there in the late 1980s. I think his draw is that university brass think he can make the school money. His mouth tends to get him in hot water, he got canned from OSU for pissing off Catholics and Polish folks along with other football-related verbal shenanigans.

Could this be a subtle message from the networks, that could end up causing the next realignment?

I still think it is inevitable that a streaming service like DAZN or even Amazon sign the Big12 or AAC. John Skipper is at DAZN and has made it no secret he wants to show college football in the near future.

We will without a doubt know the future of College Football when the B1G renegotiates their media rights, which are fast approaching. That will be the true sign of what's to come.

I think the only way the B1G expands again in the near future would be either Notre Dame, Texas or Oklahoma joining the conference. Playing devils advocate though, if the B1G reached out to Notre Dame, Texas and Oklahoma for expansion, while during media rights negotiations, THAT would probably cause an earthquake and make for an astronomical number from the Networks, which is why it isn't THAT crazy to think about. FOX/ESPN will pony up some ridiculous numbers either way, but its interesting to think about nonetheless. What could be the game changer is deals with some non traditional media like Youtube TV, Netflix or Hulu. That's what could be the game changer. The B1G's media rights are up in 23' i believe. Its going to be very interesting to see how it plays out though.

Nah. This is uncertainty from the networks that they’re going to have the same number of cable purchasers in the future.

Still blows my mind that the B1G hasn't convinced ND to get in the damn conference with their natural rivals. I know they don't gain much because Chicago is already split up with NWestern, Iowa, Wisky, and ND already - but pulling their fb program away from thier NBC contract and into the conference would be big for their network alone.

As for the XII - I wish I could care, but without Nebraska being there I just don't. The only thing I root for is the other schools to beat Texas and OU.

Flipping between games will be a pain in the arse if some of these conferences move off of the cable channels.

The Big 12 or PAC 12 need to snatch up the 4 or 6 best programs from the other conference

Is it normal to deal with these contracts 4 years in advance? The growth of CFB in the last decade has been incredible. I would imagine and ESPN/Fox are very happy cashing in for 4 more years before they have to give more money to the conference.

Have the SEC/B1G etc. updated agreements so far in advance? I genuinely do not know
