The “story” to me is the leap and improvement he made from 14s to 16s.

It might be a "story" to tennis nerds, but to the general sports fans it's not that impressive to hear that a kid got really good between the ages of 14 and 16. That happens in most every sport. The talent pool in tennis is smaller so maybe it's less common, but the fact is kids go through a lot of physical changes between 14 and 16, so it just doesn't really move the needle as is. If Shelton becomes a big star then it is an interesting part of his story. But until he wins something important, it's not a story that people are gonna care about.

Because it’s reality. Part of the aura and following of both tiger and the Williams sisters and what they did for tennis and golf viewing has to do with them being black.

But she plays a vastly inferior sport that Americans have dominated for like 20 years

ETA: black, female Americans at that

It’s incredibly insulting and racist to infer that people watched tiger because of his race. In my opinion people watched tiger because he was the greatest golfer in a generation, maybe of all time. Those who bring race into it are racist. Prove me wrong.

”part of the aura”

You really don’t think the race of woods and the Williams played a part in their stories?

It’s so ridiculous to even pretend it didn’t. The word racist is such a worthless word today

What aura? The fact that he’s like 25% black? Who gives a shite? Except for people like you who only see race.

I mean personally, I watched bc he was different from the field, part of that was bc black and azn.

His rise got kids from all over interested in the game.

So I am the one that ran countless stories about their race? I am just pointing out the reality of what occurred and does occur

Racism is believing another race is inferior

Racism is not pointing out a minority dominating a historically white sport enhances their story to the media and people

The word has zero meaning now.

And also, not that it should matter, but he is black which helps his story line, and he has a great personality.
He is FAR more white than he is black.

I mean, not that it friggin matters, but still.

Racism is viewing the world through skin color. I tell you what, if I ever need a breakdown of athletes, championships, and the color of their skin, you’ll be the first person I contact.

This thread has turned into such a shitshow. I am excited about an awesome young player that I think will revitalize American male tennis, and it just turns into crap

I should have emailed the thread to someone else to start and people wouldn’t have just taken a giant dump on it

its actually pretty shitty to not acknowledge that there are different races who may have different views and experiences
