Sorry, I have always believed the opposite. I think almost any kid with enough reps could get to be low-level D1, like a MAC school or something. It's athleticism and natural ability that puts them at high level college and in the pros.

I truly don’t care what one considers a sport vs something else

It was just a nod to an old TD thread that went on for days arguing what is and isn’t a sport.

How does this contradict what I've said? I think his talent+reps is what's putting him where he's at. He's clearly had both.

Pride87 seems to think the only time playing counts is when you're traveling and playing other 10 year olds in registered events.

Playing against his former pro father at the local country club doesn't count I guess. He should have been competing at the Puma cup in the French Riviera.

That makes him a REAL tennis expert.

I'm not mad at all, dude, relax. I guess we'll see if they make a big deal about it. Mixed kids don't usually get press unless they're doing Kaepernick shite.
I mean, Tiger is very mixed

ok, so maybe don’t attack me for bringing up something that’s a simple reality? I don’t want race to be a thing. I can’t stand it. But it is. Especially when it’s someone doing something in a sport that’s typically white

James Blake was mixed and his race was absolutely a big part of his story line even though he didn’t want it to be.

I think Shelton is going to be truly elite, and he will be the first black American male to win a tennis grand slam in 40 years. And because of that, I think it will make the media Storm that much bigger

This thread was made to talk about me thinking he is the next big American story in tennis, and to me it’s just something that will play a part in that

Why does that even matter? He's trying to imply this kid is coming out of nowhere, which he isn't, and that he'll have a good story to tell, which he doesn't.

Shelton was ranked in the 500s a year ago. He'll be ranked in the Top 50 if he beats JJ Wolf tomorrow night. I'd say that's out of nowhere.

Also on the Tiafoe story, I think part of it is his attitude and personality that makes it easy to pull for him. Much different than Fritz who looks like he hates playing tennis at times.

it’s more than that

7 years ago he wasn’t playing competitive tennis, and now he is posed to be top 50 in the world

But yeh, that’s totally not that unique or anything and I’m out of my element here talking tennis.

No, this thread is stupid.

Naturally talented son of former pro is good at the sport his father was also good at. Tale as old as time my guy. Just admit it's not a remarkable story and move on.

How have I attacked you? I haven't.

You can't say you don't want race to be a thing, and then focus on his race. Do you not get that?

This is so dumb

So because I acknowledge something is a reality, that’s “focusing” on it? You acknowledge it just as much as I do

I think it’s always been about the same on the men’s side, maybe a slight improvement in recent years.

I should have said women’s gymnastics plus both men and women in track and swimming.

Right. Because if it didn’t mention it on TD the media totally would stop

Where has the media made it a thing? I don't watch much sports news. On TD, you made it a thing.

Let’s just highlight his rise even more

His first year in college, he played court 4 on his team. Yes, he was the 4th player on his college team his freshman year

Then, his sophomore year he wins the entire ncaa title

Then, 1 year later top 50 in the world

Totally normal pace of improvement for tennis

It was nauseating

I couldn't care less about Michelle Obama. I asked you where the media is doing stories on Shelton's race.
