In the golden era for running backs he got one touchdown in 6 playoff games.

Overrated.

Barry would have had an infinite number of yards on the Cowboys teams back then.

The thing about this argument is people are making because they think a) Sanders is a better player and b) Dallas was a better team ergo if we put the better player on the better team he would get better stats. This is a (typically) lazy kind of 2 dimensional analysis. The first problem is Smith and Sanders were very different types of RB. Sanders was an outside threat with break away speed. He was capable of taking it to the house from long distances. And of course made some breath taking spectacular runs. He was must see TV. But what he wasn’t was what Dallas really needed and Smith thrived at. running between the tackles and inside the 20. Grinding out yards to control the clock especially in the 4th. An 11 play 7 minute drive in the 4th is way more valuable than 1 80yd TD run when you have the lead.

Also Detroit was not horrible in the 90s. They made the playoffs 5 times in 7 years from 91-97. Of course they didn’t win a playoff game but were still a good team and their OL was pretty good, not as good as Dallas but overall pretty good.

While I think either would do fine with any team Smith was perfect for Dallas, Sanders would not have been as effective there.

Earl Campbell was a football player who just happened to be a damn great running back.

Earl only had one style and that was straight ahead, either run you over or run through you. Lol He was an awesome RB that was overused by Bum Phillips, and sadly is paying the price for that today. But Barry Sanders was an incredible RB that made a loss look exciting. Lol He could cut on the dime at any angle, he looked like the players on Madden games literally when he ran the ball. Emmitt Smith was a small RB like Sanders, but didn't or couldn't run like Sanders I should say, very few could. Smith was just blessed to run behind those great Cowboy OLines that opened massive holes for him to run through, he was a great north-south type of runner.

but had Barry run behind the Cowboy's OLines he might have over 30,000 yards. Lol

Everytime this comes up I emphatically state Barry is tGoat.

But his dad would disagree.

Everyone says this but Eric Dickerson had more carries his first 4 years. Actually he has 4 different seasons with more carries than Campbell had in any one season including his 6th year in 88. He another 300 carry season the year after that. I don’t think Campbell’s current condition can be blamed on Bum Phillips.

ETA they had basically the same amount of rushes in college. ED had 790 vs 765 for Campbell

When they played at the Silverdome, a lot of the Lions lived around where I grew up. A buddy of mine lived down the street from Barry and shot hoops with him all the time. Some became buddies with the players just by virtue of working at Blockbuster. Who knew the Wayne Fontes era was the golden days? The upper deck of the Dome was always a bloodbath of white trash and ghetto guys getting in fights. Those were good times. Most of the fanbase is just kind of apathetic now. I wouldn't care if they moved.

Huge Barry Sanders fan, grew up watching every game that came on TV(which wasn’t often). The teams during his career weren’t really stacked with talent. I can’t believe Herman Moore doesn’t get more praise. The QB was always a question mark outside of Scott Mitchell playing well for a couple of years. No consistency, the management & ownership sucked.

You can't compare Earl Campbell and Eric Dickerson, they are 2 different types of runners. Besides, Earl Campbell played a decade before Dickerson behind some poor Houston OLines, the guy created his own yardage by running over people. That's just a really bad comparison.

Earl’s rookie season was 1978

Eric’s rookie season was 1983

Both were beasts, but Earl just destroyed everything in his way.

He will always be my favorite RB. He did a lot for no offensive line. Just think what he could have done if he would of had Emmitt Smiths line. Never celebrated and always handed the ball to the ref after a td.

GOAT RB is so subjective.

If you like electrifying and exciting, it's Barry or Gale Sayers.
If you like power, it's Earl
If you like beautiful running, it's Dickerson or the double murdering bad golfer.
If you like reliability and efficiency, it's Emmitt or Ladanian
If you like all around production, it's Faulk or Marcus

But if you measure all around greatness, the two who could do it all are Jim Brown and Walter Payton.

Walter is the GOAT RB in my opinion. He is everything mentioned above and as tough or tougher as any of the names mentioned.

What Steph Curry has done with changing how kids play basketball today, Barry did for my childhood as we tried to juke everyone out of their shoes on the playground.

For every yard Barry gained, he lost 3.

He was not a workhorse. A flash. The Lions took him out every goal to go situation...and put in another back.

If you played fantasy football in the 90's and picked Barry first, you lost money.

Fun as hell to watch, best moves, shifty as hell, but he didn't bring home the bacon.

No one wants to admit it but OJ was probably the best back ever...he had world class Olympic sprinter speed (while Barry always got pulled down 5 yards from the goal line.) First man to go over 2000 yards with an average O-line in the snow!

And OJ was strong as hell...nobody as big has ever run as fast...even Henry.

OJ was the perfectly built back.
