Greatest highlight reel player of all time. He would go for -2. 2. then 70 yards. Hard to sustain an offense like that.

This has always been my position, too, but we’re in the minority. The OP made this thread based on watching highlights. But his running style was not conducive to sustained winning. He put his team behind the chains too often.

And I think the bad Detroit OL thing is overplayed a good bit. Of course he would have had more yards with the holes the Dallas OL would have opened up. But his style would inevitably have his teams behind the chains, and Aikman wouldn’t have been nearly as successful facing more 2nd and 12s or 3rd and 13s than 2nd and 4s. Emmitt was better for that offense. But by no means do I think Emmitt is the GOAT. I think it’s probably Jim Brown. Maybe LT.

I was making this argument back in the day when most of my friends said he was the GOAT. It's impossible to tell how much was his style and how much was his crappy line.

There’s never been anything like him before or since he was in the NFL. You can make comparisons for others in the GOAT RB argument but there was nobody like Barry. He’s the greatest of them all.

Jim Brown is the GOAT NFL RB.

But if I could have any RB in the history of football, it would be Earl Campbell from the 1978 to 1980 seasons.

I’ve still never seen a RB destroy defenses like that.

Eric Dickerson from like 1983 to 1986 would be my second choice

Walter Payton. He just played for awful teams

My biggest problem with Ditka was what he did to Payton in the Super Bowl. With what Payton gave to that city and team over his years there, and then finally get to a Super Bowl and Ditka gives a sure TD handoff to the Fridge to be cute. Payton did not get a Super Bowl TD. Travesty and Ditka should always be ashamed.

Sanders ran behind 3 pro bowlers, one of which should be in the HOF. He had a great line.

Dallas had a better line. But Smith was a beast. As a Washington fan, I watched him kill us over and over. He was the better back. He won and did what backs are supposed to.

All of the Sanders fans always disregard the playoffs. Compare playoff stats. Sanders biggest game of his career came against the Redskins in the 1991 NFC Championship game. The Lions lost 41-10. Sanders had 44 yards rushing. That's not even his worst playoff performance. He once had 13 carries for -1 yards. Smith never crappies the bed like that..

He may have had more yards but I don’t know if the Cowboys would have been a better team

They wouldn't have been, imo. This conversation is as much about minimizing Emmitt's contributions as anything else. Barry was better, but Emmitt was damn good in his own right.

Emmitt had a damn nose for the endzone. Get him inside the 10 yard line and he would score 99% of the time. Don't know that Barry was that kind of back. Emmitt was the kind of back that worked perfectly for those Cowboys teams.

Sweetness - and I was no Bears fan.
Most of his yards were with fer shite teams and the defense could key on him every week. Then Brown.
The Tyler Rose & the Kansas Comet were my favorites.
See if you can find some Sayers highlights, dude was sick.

Please get out of here with that. I can think of several backs better than Jim Brown.

Supposedly Payton cried on the plane home over that and never forgave Ditka for it. Ditka claimed that he didn't even know until after the game. I call bullshite I think it was purpose because Payton was bigger than him in Chicago.

#1 Rb of all time is Jim Brown, with Barry being a close 2nd.

Barry had I think the most negative yards from scrimmage for a RB if I recall correctly.

The year he has -2 yards against the Packers (?) he ran for I think 2000 yards.

So basically in 15 games. Pretty wild.

First time I saw Barry was in person at CU when he put the nail in the Buffs with a long run in the 4th qtr but Payton was the goat. Barry, Payton and OJ are my top 3.

Walter Payton and Adrian Peterson need mentioning.

What Peterson did was absolutely insane.

I don't care what anyone says about how good Detroit's line was...I just never saw it. In fact, the most amazing plays I ever saw from Barry Sanders ended up going for 1, 0, or -1 yards. There were linemen in the backfield as soon as he got handed the ball on hundreds of plays, and Barry always did his best to turn a -4 yard play into a 0 yard play. Some of those runs were his best, IMO.
