I've never seen this many hands to the face penalties called, it's like they are using this to cover the new rule on pass interference.

The refs are paid by the NFL to influence games to their liking. They have to have a way to influence the game on demand. Hands to the face and illegal contact and holding are the new ways to do that

There are a lot of good suggestions in this thread, but sadly, I seriously have ZERO faith in the nfl to do anything about it

I agree and I have another opinion: 10 yards for holding is excessive.

How about this idea. For every infraction, we play one game were it doesn't exist. So we have a no holding game just to see what the game would look like when players have a chance to abuse the system. Then a no PI game. Then we would either learn to appreciate the system as is, or figure out ways to improve it.

eta: That no roughing the passer and no late hit games are going to be interesting.

I think most offensive penalties should just be loss of down.
or just replay of the down if on the defense. Why do any yards have to be involved? Penalties should be drastically different. If a player commits a serious penalty, having to sit out plays would make more sense than giving the other team yards. 10 yards for holding has always annoyed me.

Then there's the issue of refs being wrong. Something needs to be done about that within the game. phantom calls can and should be dealt with. However, the best team winning is not the name of the game.

That's stupid. No one is saying holding shouldn't be a penalty. It just shouldn't be 10 yard penalty.

For offensive holding, I kind of like spot of foul and loss of down. If the holding is past the line of scrimmage it is just loss of down.

For defensive holding, 5 yards, replay the down. If it is in the endzone, 10 yards and automatic first down.

I agree, but how do you handle the other side of the field? (when the defense is backed up against their own goal line and they commit a penalty worth more than half the yards to gain to the goal line).

Ball moved to the one yard line.

The NFL doesn't care about making the penalty system better.

They care about scoring so everything is geared towards allowing that to happen.

d gets called for a late hit even though it had no bearing on the throw
it's to put a heavy toll on the late hits... as a deterrent

sort of like targeting - players were not fazed by 15 yard tack ons... they are fazed by DQing themselves....

I have never liked the intentional grounding rule. If you want to protect the quarterback, let him throw it away. It's still a loss of down with no gain. Yet it's legal to clock the ball, which is the very definition of intentional grounding.

I think all auto-first downs should be done away with.

Assess the penalty yardage and go from there.

This thread made me remember the penalty that frustrates me the most. Intentional grounding is a spot foul with a loss of down. It should be a spot foul plus an additional 5 yards. What is the deterrent to throwing the ball away if it's the exact same result except you avoid taking a hit and possibly fumbling? Now, I know that this will never be changed because it helps keep QBs protected, but it still doesn't make any sense from a gameplay standpoint.

Huh? Roughing the passer is a penalty on the defense, personal foul automatic first down.

You are right. I was reading the previous post and that penalty got stuck in my head. I meant intentional grounding.

Automatic 1st down penalties

Should not exist. enforce the yardage only and if that results in a first down so be it.

An automatic first down penalty on 3rd and long is essentially like the refs handing a free turnover to the other team, in terms of impact.

Yea, automatic 1st is dumb.

Think of this scenario

3rd and 10, offense throws a 12 yard pass but there is holding.

So now 3rd and 20, offense runs a pass play and there is defensive holding...

Now it's 1st and 10. Makes no sense
