But if Arcia is the starting SS I think paying somebody $800k to fill that Lopez role in April/May/June makes more sense than locking up Lopez. I would much rather have $4m of flexibility than rostering both Nicky Lopez and Orlando Arcia for a full season. If you need to go get somebody there are a million Nicky Lopez’s out there. Hell, you will probably be able to get Nicky Lopez himself back in July if necessary. But ideally the $4m goes to Sonny Gray or someone like that and Charlie Culberson can be the mascot for a few months for $800k.
That's my point, clearing $4m only makes sense if that $4m goes towards something and by something I mean a player, not just the financial flexibility to maybe add a player.

But we’ve seen that oftentimes the savings are carried towards the deadline. We add significant payroll every July even though it’s prorated. If you’re paying Culberson $800k the first 3.5 months instead of Lopez $4m that’s money you can use at the deadline for what may be a more pressing need.
The way the bench is used by Snitker, especially in the INF, paying a glove only guy $4m to sit on the bench at the beginning of the season doesn’t seem very smart.
There are always going to be some very questionable players on the OD roster making pennies. Every year it’s the cheap fringe guys on the shuttle at the back of the roster until the deadline when things are fortified.
The MO under AA is that they are not going to pay for a real bench until the last 2 months and even then it may be a man or two short because there is so little PT available.

That's fine when you have your lineup pretty much settled, but we have clear starting spots open.

A real playoff quality bench (outside of catcher which we do use in the regular season) might cost $12m for 3 guys across 162.
If you only have those 3 guys for 33% of the season you are saving $6m ($8m-3 minimum guys) that you are using elsewhere.

Lopez is different though, simply because he can play any position on the infield and do it very well. There isn’t a defensive drop off with him on the field in any of those positions. It boils down to ‘what is that worth to a team?’, but I guess they felt it wasn’t worth it. I would disagree and say having that is well worth that money, especially when he can pinch run with speed as well, but AA didn’t call me before he pulled the trigger on this deal.

That does make sense, as the infield utility guy doesn’t get much work on the Braves. Still, I’d rather keep him for true defensive depth. I had hoped they would work with him on his hitting and see what they could do with him. Regardless, it is moot now.

Bummer is a left handed reliever that gets a ton of ground balls and strikeouts. He has issues with walks but has been a good reliever in his career. His ERA last year looks terrible but all of his advance metrics look good. I wouldn’t be surprised if Bummer has a ERA below 3 with us next year.

Let's hope Bummer's last name is not an indicator of future performance.

His barrel(swing and miss) rate is extremely good.
He'll have a competent defense behind him also. This is similar to the Johnson acquisition IMO.

Soroka will be back with the Braves at some point. He’ll get passed around then when he’s an afterthought we’ll sign him to minor league deal and he’ll pitching for us late in a season in a couple years.

Nick Anderson traded to the Royals for cash.

More 40-man roster flexibility. Feels like AA is moving his pieces around the board and getting them in position.

Honestly, to do what? The Braves don’t go out and get great players. I’ll use an analogy I have used here in the past. AA goes and bargain bin shops for reclamation projects, and never hits the ‘new release’ section. There’s nothing wrong with digging through the bargain bin reclamation projects, but hit the damn ‘new release’ section every now and then.

I don’t think AA will ever be in on a 30+ AAV free agent but I believe he will get a pitcher like Sony Gray, Nola, or E Rod. His mistake last year was thinking the pitching would be/get healthy. I don’t think he makes the same mistake twice.

Any of those would be nice.
