the Astros have been fielding a AA or AAA team for years now. I don't understand why anyone would defend that.

It isn't like MLB is the NBA and they have positioned themselves to get a can't miss prospect #1 in the draft.

He's owned the team for two years. Its about the money. Its all guaranteed. You can easily paint yourselves in a corner. Not like the NFL where you just cut people.

So you would rather them be stuck as a 70-80 team for a decade then take a shot at forming a contending team?

No other team has had their farm system run into the ground like the astros. This was the previous owners fault, not theirs.

The Astros long term problem is their division. The Rangers have a better farm system right now. The Angels will be able to spend big. Houston isn't going to leapfrog those two with their current strategy of development. (Although the Pujols and Hamilton deals are increasingly horrible as they get into later years).

Peter Gammons:

"If I'm an ALE or ALC owner, Houston's plan to have no payroll, lose, get the 1-2 pick 4 years in a row and still steal revenue-sharing $ [money] may guarantee 3 teams in the AL West win 90 games, and make the playoffs, and spit on the integrity of the sport."

He's only pissed because that plan would screw his beloved Red Sox.

Barely. Both teams have a top 10 farm system.

Yeah somehow I doubt ol' Pete took such a hardline stance when the Rays were doing it circa 2000-2007 when it directly benefitted his beloved Sox chances of making the playoffs every year.

Uh, previous 8 years, yes. Right now, both organizations farm system are about equal.

They may be able to spend big - but they continually throw good money at bad investments. Plus, in 3 years, when the Astros young talent are in their prime, the Angels will be handcuffed with over-bloated payroll with not nearly the talent to support it.

Enough with the people attacking the messenger. He's been critical of the Rays but that's not the point. What the Astros and Rays has done has been a bad thing for the fans of their teams and bad for the competitive product MLB wants to present.

Interesting.

It would definitely be a win as far as PR goes.

I'm just glad that I wasn't around to argue with molsusports. How gnorant is that guy?

MLB is not a WIN NOW league. Unless you're the Yankees, it's not going to happen

I don't even understand why saying what I said is controversial or personally offensive to you. The present Astros ownership obviously isn't trying to win right now and is happily pocketing a nice profit instead of taking even moderate steps to improve their on the field product.

if they win 40 or 70 games, waht's the point? why waste the money?

the point is to win more games and resemble a professional team.

other teams shouldn't have to share revenue with a club like Houston that isn't even trying this year

What do you mean by this? Are you saying they're just not supported like teams in NY, LA, and Chicago?

And for many of those years they had the kind of payroll you, and other morons, are asking for. What do they have to show for it? An even worse rebuilding job to deal with.

They have completely turned the system around the last couple years and will spend money when they can actually compete.

Well they definitely don't have the nationwide bandwagon fanbase like those teams do.

Luhnow has said that the Astros plan to add payroll when the prospects begin to surface in the majors. The plan has been laid out by him numerous times. The Astros have supported large payrolls in the past (recent past) and will do it again.
