The College Football Playoff was a good idea on paper. But I think overall it may have made College Football worse. I broke it down into pros and cons lists to see if hurts the great game of College Football.

Cons:
-Games are Bad: In 12 games of the CFP, only 3 have been close. It makes for bad football, and makes the playoff seem unnecessary. It also lowers nationwide interest in College Football if every time you watch the playoffs, which are supposed to be the best of the best, the games are blowouts.
-Gutting the Bowl System: It used to be a huge deal to play in and win any of the New Years 6 Bowls. Now though, with the playoff, the bowls seem like lousy consolation games. The teams don't care because it's a meaningless exhibition now, and fans don't want to go because there's not much of a point. (This stood out to me when I went to the Sugar Bowl last night.) Gone are the days of bowl pride and pageantry. (Except for the Rose Bowl because ESPN pumps it up so much.)
-Inconsistent: The way teams are selected is dumb. The committee is prone to human error, and teams get in by meeting ambiguous tests such as "eye-test" and "complete team". There is no set formula to get into the playoff. Less prestigious schools also have a major disadvantage.
-Why it Exists in the First Place: The CFP exists because of LSU vs Bama in the BCS Championship. However, those were easily the 2 best teams that year. They would have still met in the title anyway after demolishing Okie State and Stanford.

Pros:
-It Serves its Purpose: The 4 seed has won twice. The 3 seed has a chance this year. It also eliminates the "what if" discussions we had in previous eras. However, most of the championships have been 1 vs 2, same as in the BCS era.
-$$$$$$$$$$$$$$: TV ratings and ticket sales make a lot of money. (None of it goes to the players though)

Do you think the playoff is a poor system? In your perfect world would you keep the playoff, expand it, or go back to the BCS?

Keep it at 4. Unfortunately, it will go to 8 someday

Lol if you think the 2012 Natty game was the reason for the playoffs. It was and always will be about revenue.

ETA: also worth noting the BCS produced some lopsided games as well. There will never be a formula that creates close games every time.

Yeah, more quality games with potentials for upsets sounds just AWFUL.

I swear some of you people make no sense.

I don't see any cons, honestly.

The demise of the bowl season is laughable. That shite was meaningless for every established program for decades, just like it is today. If you've never been to that level, sure, it's exciting, but once you're established it's meaningless.

I’m all for more games. But in college football there won’t be many upsets because of lack of parity. The rich get richer with the current system.

You mean you don't breathlessly wait to find out which 4 of the 6 teams with a chance at the playoffs actually make the playoffs?

No one knows that.

Everyone just thinks it because they see one game.

Eliminate the cupcake games during the season and allow for an expanded playoff.

Better quality football.

Not sure why people are against this.

Facts though are that 9/12 games with 4 teams have been blowouts. What makes you think it will be different with 8 or more?

Probably won't be, but the #4 seed winning it twice validates the fact we're not doing a great job ranking them, so 5-8 have a shot.

I'm all for 8 if it goes to games on campus. That makes it worthwhile.

I used to be all about 8 team playoff but I like it at 4. I think it weeds out the weaker teams--at least you get a shot at it. And if they are all blow outs, well then you had a clear answer who was the best team in the country that particular year.

teams like Baylor and Wisconsin (#7 & 8 in final CFP poll) don’t deserve to be in

2nd tier d1 and "AA" love those games. Big money. Tv in region.

4 teams is enough.

If you want bowls to have cachet, have only ny6 games besides the cfp.

The biggest change is guys sitting out.. So be it.

Half. Half of the championships have been 1 vs 2. Another was 3 v 4, there was a 4 v 2, and now a 1 v 3. A 1 has never won it.

They've ALWAYS been meaningless exhibitions if they aren't for the National Championship. Why don't people understand this? This hasn't changed.

Playoffs work in every other level of college football and sports. Yet somehow, it's "ruining" the FBS. This is simply a matter of something different than the old way, and everyone complaining about it is the old man yelling at kids to get off his lawn.

CFP is a failure as it’s not a true playoff

Either make it 16 with all champs or 24 via bylaws

Playoffs didn’t gut the bowl system, having 75 bowls did.

Need to change to 8 wins to be bowl eligible

More? The semi final games have been shite shows (about a 25 pt spread)

So we wanna add more games/blowouts?

We already have an 8 team playoffs with conference championship games.

Then they'll get beat and we move onward. What's the harm?
