It prevents a situation like 2004 Auburn. Clemson would have been left out this year without any sort of playoff system. Could you imagine an undefeated, reigning NC not getting a chance to play that game? So, it does serve a purpose. Especially this season with three undefeated P5 champions. A 1-2 bye, 6 team playoff could work. I think Clemson/Oregon and Georgia/Oklahoma would have been entertaining games. Rotate through the NY6 bowls with 1 being left out every year to serve it's original purpose. Or just demote the Cotton Bowl or Fiesta Bowl.

And this is why it'll be at 8 soon enough.

With the Pac 12 being perennially irrelevant to the national championship picture, they're leaving a lot of dollars on the table. I wonder what kind of ratings the CFP semifinal games had on the west coast.

Honestly for teams in the hunt for a Championship, bowls had become stale and unmotivating before the CFP. Many better teams mailed it it.

This, plus live sports ticket sales are declining. Pretty much every sport is struggling with fewer people attending games.

The idea that bowl games are big deals hasn't been too valid for a while. This has also been a bad year for compelling matchups.

I went to the Indy Bowl. The game was a snoozer but it was live football, and better than sitting around the house the day after Christmas. People are so lazy now they even forego things that might be enjoyable.

Want to know how I know you don't know what You're talking about.

Off the top of my head. Alabama vs Clemson was close twice. OU vs UGA was in OT. UGA vs Bama was also tight until the 4th where Bama pulled it out and OSU Clemson this year

That game went into OT. Both of UGA's games two years ago were OT games.

Dude must not be counting the championship games though.

-Games are Bad: In 12 games of the CFP, only 3 have been close. It makes for bad football, and makes the playoff seem unnecessary. It also lowers nationwide interest in College Football if every time you watch the playoffs, which are supposed to be the best of the best, the games are blowouts.

Why do you correlate getting the four best teams with expecting them to play close games?

Sometimes one or two teams are just way better than the others.

Yeah, more quality games with potentials for upsets sounds just AWFUL. I swear some of you people make no sense.

Ehh freakish upsets don’t really interest everyone. I’d rather the teams involved actually reflect those who have had a GREAT regular season, not a good one. Having more and more teams in a tournament isn’t always the best way to determine a champion of an entire season.

both of those were Championship games, if you follow the discussion, he was talking about the semi finals. Including the championship game there are 3 games a year, so 17 total including this years semi finals, not 12. There have been 12 semi final games and only i think 3 of those have been close, UGA-OU being 1. Bama-tOSU the first year, and Clemson-tOSU this year. There have been rest have been by double digits including the 1 Bama-Clemson matchup that was not the championship game. Multiple by 21+

It will get a little old if we have OSU, Clem, Bama/LSU/UGA every year,

This is a big problem although I’m not sure it’s the fault of the playoff. It’s just more pronounced of late bc the ACC, PAC, and Big12 keep sucking overall. Huge geographic swaths of the country aren’t sniffing the playoffs year after year.

If anything this year shows more than ever that a playoff is necessary. Who would have been left out? Clemson most likely, since they were number 3. That would have been a travesty, considering they won it last year and went undefeated this season.
