How long has this Saudi breakaway league been a story?
I’m not a big golf guy and only heard about it last week but it sounded like 10–15 pretty big names were considering it.
It sounds a lot like the European Super League in soccer that fell apart due to big time fan anger. And it ultimately led to small fines for the instigators of the proposed breakaway.
Are you guys interpreting Phil saying “it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to change how the Tour operates” to mean he was fully bluffing?
His whole quote is so dumb that it alienates him from all sides. It insults the Saudis, it pisses of the PGA because he will either align with the Saudis for leverage or actually leave the Tour, and it annoys his sponsors.
Also it looks like Greg Norman is the liaison for Saudi Arabia. Reminds me of how Arsene Wengee is the point person for the insane idea to make the World Cup every two years and to have continental competitions every other year in soccer.

Phil is likely being suspended by the Tour, as Phil announced today he is taking a break from golf to refocus on what’s important. But I can’t see anyway whatsoever that Phil isn’t teeing it up at Augusta National this April as the reigning PGA Champion
The Masters isn't sanctioned by the PGA.
He'll be there.

He basically said the Saudis are horrible people with awful human rights abuses
there is a show on hbo about how the saudis finally allowed women to drive. there was 1 uber driver, who was female, and no one but a few would get in her car.
the women who pushed the leaders to allow women to drive, all disappeared the night it was passed. Was funny watching women who just learned how to drive, teach other women to drive.

"cancelled"? People throw this around way too loosey goosey. Nobody's getting cancelled.

The Tour makes huge money and most doesn't go to the players.
Explain
The money isnt being pocketed by some rich owner
The money it makes goes to the players, charity, putting on the events and to pay their employees
Im sure their executives are well paid but its nothing like owners pocketing hundreds of millions in other sports

None of the majors are run by the PGA tour
Masters is Augusta
US Open is USGA
The Open is R&A
PGA is PGA of America (which isnt the PGA Tour)
The Players is the “major” of the PGA Tour

You simply do not screw around with those guys. If your name isn’t Tiger Woods they can tell you to Fisk right off.

Meh Idk. I know three different people that have ran into Phil and all of them said he was a very nice guy and chatted for a few minutes.
I know everyone says he's fake, but countless people (including me) claim to have had very warm/friendly interactions with him in public, and very few claim anything different.
My take has always been that if you're so fake that all your random encounters are pleasant, who cares if deep down you're a douche at heart?

Phil is mad at the PGA because they will not give the players access to all the photography and tv of them. Kind of like a NIL type thing The players want to be able to do NFT’s and stuff.

I’m still trying to figure out why KPMG dropped him? I mean KPMG has offices in Saudi Arabia and China. Are they worried that he offended the SAs?

I think there’s 2 things happening here:
1. Phil wants the PGA tour to give video rights to the players
2. He’s trying to make some money potentially with the Saudis
He has also been critical of lesser players getting too big of a share of tournament prize money. He feels it should be more top loaded. And that's what pissed off the run of the mill PGA tour players the most.

Maybe they were just looking for a reasonable excuse to drop him. I wonder how much time he is going to take away from the Tours?

Greg Norman tried to do this years ago and had a similar experience. In fact, I'm pretty sure Norman is associated with this effort as well. I don't know the details of the dispute, but over the years there have been several business minded players who have taken issue with the money split between the players and the tour.

I have no idea honestly, but it does seem the PGA tour is ripe for a big fraud scandal. Without owners and people watching over their income any organization like the PGA is going to have people stealing or otherwise working back room deals.
If the posters are right and the PGA only pays out about 25% to the players without owners, that’s a shite ton of money being filtered through a ton of executives.
Phil’s too big and too good to be cancelled over this. But it’ll be interesting to see what happens.

Yeah I’d real curious to know understand the financial dynamics. Is the PGA sitting on a boat load of cash? Are the execs making more than the golfers? Or is the argument that they aren’t maximizing the IP they have and the players could make more money if they owned the rights?
With the venue changing each week it’s not an inexpensive undertaking to put on these tournaments. Comparing it to other pro sports might not be an apt comparison.

And Rory, as much as I like him, has completely sold out to “Hollywood”. He’s more worried about his image and being a celebrity than winning at golf. Hard to blame him, he was halfway to being a billionaire by time he turned 30 years old. Rory has played both sides of the fence. He looked like the tough guy this week condemning the Saudi Tour. But what took so long for him to speak out against it?
Rory has been saying for a long time now that he is not interested in the Saudi league.
Also, Phil is trying to come off as the savior while complaining that the common man PGA golfer takes too much money from the big names.

The Masters is still 6 weeks away. That feels like a long time, and storylines at big tournaments like the PLAYERS will have come and gone by that point.
I bet if he is allowed to tee it up by Augusta National, he will.

He is nice and jovial when he has a 1 minute encounter with someone, so the media runs with the PHil is so nice card and it sticks. And he buys into it. But with everyone that actually has to spend real time with him he is an a-hole. That’s exactly what “fake” is. Maybe it’s just me but it seems a man should be judged with how the people actually in their life think about them, and not some random person that says hey for 60 seconds
Breed made a great point on his show. Players before were terrified to ever speak about Phil because they knew he had the god guy image. Now that they have an opportunity, they have buried him. That shows a lot to me

Maybe he has. The Saudi talk has been mostly background noise for me until this last week when it all blew up.

Fair point. Phil has said that some of the biggest stars deserve a higher piece of the pie. Although it sounds harsh at first listen, if you think about it, casual golf fans aren’t tuning in on Sunday to watch Juaquin Nieman duel Cameron Young. If Brooks Koepka is battling Justin Thomas for the win, more people will watch.
Also, Phil has an issue with the PGA Tour throwing out a lot of Fed Ex points and such for tournaments in October and November. Most of the stars that have been playing in majors and Ryder/Walker Cups are taking a break. Back in the day there were no tour events that time of the year and the players had an off season. But now, the “2022 season” actually starts in October or 2021.
